I like the Lifestyle sections of online newspapers. Better than any magazine.

No I was just intrigued at the thought of a magazine that only seemed to be available to patients!

I just use Gransnet as my magazine.
It has everything I want.
I won't list the topics as GNetters already know what's on offer!
And it changes daily or even by the hour!!

Jane Did read or look through the 'Peoples friends' that you found in DRs waiting room?
When I first read your OP I thought you wanted to buy one!

Jalima you sound like my DH. He reads everything. Drives me mad when we are out and I have to wait whilst he reads up on every bit of archeology and wildlife in the area.

I don`t buy it regularly, but enjoy it from time to time, and the cover pictures are lovely.

I buy Landscapes, it comes out every two months. No ghastly stories , make overs etc, but interesting articles about life around the country, gardening and cookery with only a few adverts. Even DH reads it and he's a Private Eye and the Economist subscriber!

What would an ideal magazine for modern Grans look like?
For me I'd like humerous articles. I always used to enjoy Punch. Maybe with Private Eye cartoons and spoof letters page? Plus something indefinable I suppose that would key into where we are in our lives now. Something Gransnettish in all its infinite variety. Not much hope for that I fear.

Peoples friend appears in our GPs surgery. What I want to know about this and similar things like birthday cards is would we really be happy to get these magazines because they are, (?were) what say 70/80 yr olds might have been happy with twenty years ago.

Our village post office is under new management and the birthday cards are now dreadful. There were a lot with jokes about old men with their willies out and a lot of cards for 70 birthdays with very twee pictures on them nothing much in between.

I know several women in their 80s and the dear old lady cards with pretty flowers on just do not suit their personalities one bit. Are the card manufactures not moving in line with how older the people live and behave any more?

I think when I reach the Big 70 early in 2018 I will have to put out a message that I really don't do twee old ladies.

I agree Jane10 we definitely need magazines which are a pleasure to read. I think there was a thread a little while ago about magazines, but a bit nostalgic again. I recently picked up a copy of Peoples' Friend and found it friendly, but not something I would want every week. Will seek it out on the web.

I come from a long line of Friend readers. Mum, grans, aunts.

Talking of picture, my grandpa loved to paint. So was very keen to see the painted water colour on the cover every week
I also read the little children's story at the back.
Every Christmas all the men folk in the family bought the Peoples Friend Annual as present for their DW.

I hasten to add that I only know this by the magic of Google. I never read it (though might find it comforting these days, as you say)

Blimey! How high tech. Well its nice to hear that there's a place for it in the modern world. No nasty stories just pleasance. Actually maybe we need that more than ever now.

Well to make amends for waxing nostalgic, I can tell you that there is a digital edition of People's Friend, for the modern fan.

That brings back memories. It was DMIL's favourite and we always used to hunt out Summer and Christmas specials for the DC to give her as presents. With those and a constant supply of Daniel O'Donnell tapes, she was a happy and grateful grandma

Yes, people's grans and mums (and MiLs!) used to get it but I wasn't sure these days.
I used to always buy weekly magazines (Woman's Own and Woman) but gave up on them years ago. Maybe my concentration span increased!

MIL used to buy it regularly; I usually read it if I went over because I read everything unless it is totally boring. I used to read all the notices on the bus when I was a child, all the notices in the doctor's surgery etc etc.

They sell it in Tesco .

My aunts used to pass it on to me amongst other he other women's mags she bought. It was the only one I didn't bother to read.

You can buy it in Kiwiland! In an actual newsagents, in the area of Morningside where my niece lives.
