Things we don't see anymore

You can still get Caramac in lots of shops. I think it was relaunched some years ago. I wish they'd relaunch Old Jamaica and Aztec bars too.

If we were seen hatless anywhere between school and home, we were given a "hat detention". A day spent wearing the wretched thing in school.

84067 was my mums co-op number...metal tins of biscuits ,sugar in blue bags Woodbines sold in paper packs of 5 (or singles) ,sawdust on the butchers floor,and queuing up once a year on Divi Day.

Silk underwear made from parachute silk, darned socks, little brooches of embroidered flowers on felt with a safety pin sewn on the back.

I remember going to the co-op with my mum and seeing the money being put in canisters and whizzing over our heads to the cashier. She also had a co-op number which she used to rattle off every time she shopped there.

I also remember my mum buying me Hartnell in Love talk for my birthday in a pink container shaped like a heart.

We had the Corona man calling with fizzy drink and when the bread man came mum always got something called a Bun Round.

Our school hats (felt, bowler hat style in the winter - panamas with very sharp edges, lethal if thrown frisbee-style - in the summer) had elastic sewn in to them, which went under the chin to keep them on our heads in windy weather.

A favourite sweet that my mother served us was a 2" piece of swiss roll, cut side up, with a swirl of condensed milk on the top. I think she said it was something they used to get in Lyons cafes in the war.

Living in East Anglia, which the BBC didn't seem to have heard of, we often had disturbance on the TV. Especially in the summer - Wimbledon was often interrupted by sudden spurts of Dutch television, or just fuzzy wiggly lines. Radio reception was no better. No wonder we listened to the Pirates.

Maryeve - I can remember larger stores using metal tube to send money to cashier & change coming back down - no it's not your imagination!!

I went to a state grammar school where, up until the third year, the girls had to wear berets and the boys caps with the winter uniform. I lived too close to the Senior Mistress so I could not take my beret off until I was nearly home for fear of being seen and receiving an order mark - a bit mean seeing as I was no longer on school premises!

Or you could add chickens running around the house, also hay barns.

Watermelon we still get milk delivered in bottles (can have plastic if you want) plus Milkman delivers lots of things.

Postmen - still in uniform but more likely to be shorts & shirts now - I'm sure they're glad they no longer have to wear the heavy uniform & cap - not practical in our climate.

Good to see Home Delivery returning (large Supermarket chains).

My local Post Office/General Store delivers (useful if you can't get to shops or for heavy shopping - they do lovely fruit & veg but I have to choose how much I can carry!!!

There is a lovely old fashioned sweet shop near my sister's house in the Yorkshire Dales. A must-visit for her grandchildren!

I still have milk bottles on the doorstep, SW London, all organised online now - can order (or cancel) all sorts of other things too before 9 pm the night before. The milk is more expensive than the supermarket but I don't mind since its one less thing to have to think about buying and lugging back from the shops. Esp. now I'm retired when I shop a lot more often, walk there and get the bus back, rather than drive.

I remember (just) the little brass tubes in shops which whizzed off with the money and came back with the change.

Also can just remember the milkman coming with a horse. My dds used to find this hilarious - never mind the olden days, to them it was more like the Dark Ages.

Bronco hard loo paper! Horrible.

Cutting up Mars Bars with a knife, since it was far too extravagant to eat the whole thing at once!

Little blue twists of salt in packets of crisps.

They still sell Angel Delight in my local Sainsburys.

Oh, and chicken (scampi, sausage) in the basket disappeared because the baskets were wicker and so couldn't be cleaned properly - health and safety....

The thing I miss most of all is seeing children playing out - properly like we used to in the street, in fields and woods totally unsupervised - and safe

Lillyflower....maybe that is why we are nostalgic.
There were no credit cards,but I remember the Hoover man coming to the house to demonstrate a twin tub washer.I was in trouble the next day as I wrote in my school news book that my parents had a washing machine,but also let out that it was to be paid weekly !!!
