Exactly, breeze. There seem to be 103 active threads at the moment. 21 are in News and Politics, and are easy to avoid. A few, like this one, have veered that way to, but are still easy to avoid once you click on them and see the subject matter.

I'm not interested in Eastenders, air fryers or tennis, but don't feel that I have to join in with discussions about them.

Bit baffled by this thread. As far as I am aware it's not compulsory to read everything on Gransnet? Or maybe I haven't read the rules. Agree, been a bit heavy on the politics recently, and also agree lighter threads have been kidnapped and dragged kicking and screaming into the arena of politics against their will on occasion; but there's always been something a little lighter to read/post/start a new thread on. Room for everyone and everything I hope.

Lully or how to clean my kitchen floor?

I bought a steam cleaner (after reading a Gransnet thread ) and it has cleaned the kitchen floor very well indeed this morning (with a bit of help from me of course).

It is interesting how workplaces vary so. DD1 worked in one very pleasant place, where everyone got on with their own thing, liaised with the others, helped out others if necessary, and so on. Then Her immediate boss left and was replaced by someone worked by setting one against another, carping about everyone's work, and resenting anyone who had been there a long time. The whole atmosphere changed and most left within six months.

DiL, too, had an excellent immediate boss who arranged with HR for her to leave early on a Friday to be home before sundown and to come in early and leave late other days, to make up the time. As a result, the firm got more, not less, work from DiL, who willingly did more than she was expected to in the supportive atmosphere, and took stuff home too. Boss left and was replaced by someone (less capable!) who wanted to "make her mark" by changing everything, criticising everyone, and having everyone present strictly to the same hours. When DiL politely pointed out her agreed times, she was told "You should change your religion to suit your career!" HR stepped in at this point, with some home truths about managing a team and legalities, but that conscientious employee had already looked for and found other work. Several other people left soon after.

jingle If I wrongly perceived the agony aunt comment as being mildly spiteful, I apologise. I do have a tendency to be over-sensitive.

I will start a new thread on something that many people may find frivolous but I am finding very worrying today.

Petra, well said. Like you I have worked in the real world all my life (engineering/manufacturing) but always found the vast majority of my colleagues to be very pleasant and supportive when needed. On the other side of the coin, my daughter works for a council and it could not be more different, sounds a horrid place to work, very competitive and unpleasant, she always seems to be watching her back. I guess I was lucky (as was Mrs P (not for marrying me, but for the great company she worked for). Both Mrs P and myself still socialise with our old work colleges regularly.

Wherever there's a bit of a ding dong, there you will find GandTea. Especially, or perhaps only if, I'm in there somewhere.

Since we're speaking plainly.

GandTea If people are venomous, so be it. It doesn't bother me. I suppose because I've lived and worked in the real world all my life. When people are passionate about something that's the way it comes out. I still think that generally people on here are very polite. I'm sure there are many of us who would want to speak more openly than we do.

As I am the only male to have posted lately, why don't you just say what you mean. You just have to find something nasty to say if someone doesn't agree with you. Oh and in case you are in any doubt I'm talking to Jinglbellsfrocks.

And before you say, this wasn't suppose to be a pleasant comment.

Why do you assume that was aimed at you jings? You are not normally so fragile and sensitive. Lets get back to where we were - either enjoying the "liveliness" of certain threads or avoiding it on others - such as this one. I appreciate both types.

Petra, a selection of serious discussion is great, but why do those threads so often end in venom, rather than friendly debate.

jingle atta girl! I think it's wonderful. I hope it's changed the face of GN. In the past I had lots of 'interesting' thoughts in my head but would never put them out there because this forum was mostly "more tea vicar" Now that's changed because we have seen a deeper thinking in a lot of people.
