A Wiccan wedding

We are going to a Wiccan wedding next week. I wonder if anyone has any experience of this ceremony. I understand from the bride that the happy couple will be jumping over a broomstick and some hand fasting is involved. I am sure it will be a great event, I don't want to do anything wrong!

Ds/dil had a beautiful humanist wedding - they're legal here in Scotland so no additional trip to the registrars was needed. They were able to incorporate all that was important to them, write their own vows etc, and it also included a hand fasting. Dil and her friends made the cord for this part of the ceremony. Various friends gave readings and the choir that they both belonged to sang. Service was held outdoors on a gloriously sunny April day. The same celebrants have also conducted the naming ceremonies for both dgs.

Exactly Harrigran. Still, I suppose a bit of pagan dancing and twig waving is harmless. If it really lights yer candle.hmm

It all sounds fabulous. Please tell us all about it chocolate pud ?
The only "different" occasioon Ive attended was a Buddist type of Harvest Festival.
It was Ecumrnical as the Bishop was there and spoke about respecting one and anothers beliefs. Then there was gorgeous food...curries etc. It was in the 1980s but I still remember it well.

Oh what fun. Wish I could come.

harrigran Thu 23-Jun-16 11:23:32

You still have to visit the registrar or the marriage is not legal.

However, like everyone else, of course I hope everyone at this fad event has a fun time.

It's faddish to me, but then most weddings (not the act of getting married) are in ny view. I don't expect anyone to agree with me. I often have out-on-a-limb views smile. My preferences are nearly always for simplicity, no fuss, and preferably not much noise either.

I regard all religions as faddish too.

It sounds like a really happy occasion, I do so hope you enjoy it choc. Please let us know.

My friend had a Wicca wedding and it was fantastic. It was held outside a castle with everyone asked to stand in a circle. Some of the men were given fake swords / axes to hold and when the ceremony started they were asked to relinquish these weapons. The guy then spoke about the couple and there were a few family members that also did "readings" - not religious just poems about friendship and love. They did the hand fasting ceremony then we went back indoors for a meal and ceilidh. There was no broomsticks or potions / spells cast.

The bride wore a long purple dress with a floor length cape (as it was cold outside), her husband the kilt (as did most of the men).

Enjoy yourself as its so lovely and makes a change from thr bridezilla meringue puffball weddings and hypocrites that never attend church but suddenly want a religious wedding (another friend did this one - even accepting a bible each from the minister when neither of them had stepped inside a church since school!).

Not sure it can be classed as faddish as surely it is quite an ancient belief? I am all for new experiences. We totally love Chalice Well, how fabulous to get married there! flowers

My cousin's daughter had a Wiccan 'celebration' a few years ago. It was held in the garden of a lovely country house with the sun shining down. She wore a green wedding dress and green veil and arrived in the circle of friends and rellies via an arch of greenery. We all had to turn to the north, east south and west and 'pray' to the appropriate gods. I think a broomstick was involved at some point and the couple drank mead and also ate a concoction of sweetmeats! I did get a little confused, as did my nonagenarian aunt and the 'bride's mother, Aunt and I did get a fit of the giggles at one point. An 'alternative' folk group played during the day. It was a lovely family get together, if different - but I still don't think they are actually married, in the legal sense, but if that's what floats your boat.........smile

thatbags Thu 23-Jun-16 07:21:23

I'm not really 'into' weddings. Marriage, yes. Weddings, not so much. And the more faddish they are the less I'm keen on them.
