Feeling sorry for men

Recently I was taking part in a discussion on a website that is mainly made up of men when it dawned on me how equality has affected men.

I'm not saying we should go back to the times when women had few or no rights, unequal pay, lack of opportunities etc. but I'm wondering if it's gone too far in some ways.

The men were talking about the hours they sit in shops waiting for their wives to try on yet another piece of clothing and how they pass the time. I asked them why they did it. Why go shopping when they hate it so much? The consensus was that it kept the peace. It was easier than the argument and bad feeling that would happen if they said no. The image of a bored man waiting outside a ladies changing room is a standard joke but really it's a man doing something to keep the peace. Would it be seen as funny if a woman was doing something she hated just to keep the peace?

Images of videos and images of woman as sex objects often cause outrage yet the Diet Coke advert where a group of women leer at a man with no shirt on is seen as funny. As are adverts that depict men as halfwits who are incapable of using household appliances, caring for children, etc.

Surely gender equality means that everyone is treated with respect. It seems to me that things have tipped over the other way.

hmm

FarNorth Thu 23-Jun-16 12:40:22

You mean John Lennon and not Anya, I hope, WW.

Idiot!

Anya Thu 23-Jun-16 11:58:31

BUT, I do think women are stronger in different ways and men are less tough than they'd have us believe.

After all it was a man who wrote these lines

"Woman I know you understand
The little child inside the man"

GandTea Thu 23-Jun-16 07:48:00

Exactly WW smile

whitewave Thu 23-Jun-16 07:44:12

Do I feel sorry for men? Of course not. They are quite able to vigorously pursue their own interests. In an equal relationship one doesn't feel sorry for the other!

GandTea Thu 23-Jun-16 07:41:58

Elegran, Freudian slip maybe, another case of brain v fingers not working together

GandTea Thu 23-Jun-16 07:40:18

janeayressister LOL, you obviously don't know my sense of humour yet -- I do enjoy banter.

janeayressister Wed 22-Jun-16 22:51:22

GandTea ...your post that I commented upon was the one about the Lingerie Catalogues. I thought it was a windup and it was.
NanaandGrampy I did make assumptions based upon few paragraphs.
Life with my DH goes up and down.

Elegran Wed 22-Jun-16 22:34:30

G&T Surely you didn't really mean to post "Surly women buy lingerie to please men . . ." If women are being surly, they won't be in a mood to please anyone!

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 22:08:03

It's taken us 53 years, but we are in a better place in our 70's than we have ever been for a host of reasons. As you say there have been humps and hollows on the way (mostly caused by teenage children) but we have come through.

NanaandGrampy Wed 22-Jun-16 22:00:02

smile exactly Gandtea

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 21:55:06

NanaandGrampy Good on yer ! Live & love long.

NanaandGrampy Wed 22-Jun-16 21:53:49

Nothing perfect about my life Janey but as you are basing your assumption on just a couple of paragraphs I can see why you might think that.

It's taken us 40 years to get to this place. But don't be misled we have had ups and downs but worked through it . I stand by my comments though , I've obviously got 'the one' smile .

He doesn't always get it right but then neither do I. He's still far from emotionally clueless. I obviously trained him well.

I don't believe you can generalise.

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 21:52:42

Are you taking the P.... Depends on which post you are talking about. If you mean the last couple or so, of course it's a wind up.
If you mean the one, Wed 22-Jun-16 19:24:33, then I was deadly serious.
Mrs P may think me emotionally clueless, but I do try.

Jalima Wed 22-Jun-16 21:50:14

janeayresiser I don't think he is (G&Tea that is grin)

Lullydully* have you watched Peppa Pig? Daddy Pig is an absolute numpty (apparently) - Peppa is always deriding him. And George is always crying.

janeayressister Wed 22-Jun-16 21:42:10

NanaandGrampy sorry but you do come over as a bit perfecto. GandTea you are taking the P*
I have also been married for over 40 years and although my husband was far from being clueless in his job,( he being a highly paid Professional) , I still think he is clueless when it comes to being emotionally intelligent and perceptive. I don't know anyone who lives in such blissful harmony as NanaandGrampy either. All my friends say their husbands are emotionally clueless.

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 21:36:34

No problem. I'll settle for just the green wellies.

Jalima Wed 22-Jun-16 21:35:11

I do have some green wellies, but as for the rest, forget it grin

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 21:34:23

Oh I don't know green wellies with a basque could do it for me. grin

Greyduster Wed 22-Jun-16 21:31:47

That'll have John Norris beat hands down then, GandTea!

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 21:00:48

I help Mrs P by getting all the lingerie catalogues I can, I find the Ann Summers one particularly good.

Jalima Wed 22-Jun-16 20:54:14

B******
grin

GandTea Wed 22-Jun-16 20:47:44

Jalima, Surly women buy lingerie to please men, look sexy and inviting, so it's only sensible for us to give our approval.

Jalima Wed 22-Jun-16 20:30:53

I mean... who drinks Coke anyway
not me, it is vile stuff
DH doesn't drink it either though - oh dear, we must have similar taste
