I have been a member and regular contributor to GN since its inception, many of you will know me as Pompa.

I have always tried to be helpful to those that need it where my skills are appropriate. I have always been compassionate to those in trouble and always tried to inject a little humour into my posts.

I am not racist, feminist or any other form of ist (perhaps a bit of a pessimist now)

In all the years I have been here I have not knowingly been reported.

But I have now been reported ( I guess for racism because of my humorous thread in the Gardening forum regarding immigrant Spanish slugs.

GN is no longer the great site it used to be, it has become very unpleasant on many threads, dominated by a few posters.

Many GNers are now afraid to post for fear of verbal retribution.

Humour that is in the least edgy is condemned by a few.

Please, please will those Gners that want GN to become the fun site that it was again please speak up.

I am now leaving GN, I'm sure that there are those that are now cheering as they have won, but to the rest of my friends,
Love
Pompa

Please do not argue over this, Pax, as we used to say at schools (I never realise it was Latin until about a month ago)

The email I had from GNHQ was in no way threatening or unpleasant, annoying yes, but I am easily annoyed. And subsequent emails were friendly and constructive.

I think that's unfair on HQ jingle. Plenty of vulnerable elderly people have had unpleasant comments aimed at them by posters on gransnet which can be far more hurtful than an email from HQ sad.

Elegran Tue 07-Jun-16 09:35:52

Lost a bit of that post. It should have read "when a bit of light relief is injected into their discussions. Those who post on lighter subjects have an equal right to object when the po-faced try to bowdlerise their thread.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 07-Jun-16 09:33:39

I think it is sad that the welfare of the site, as a business, is put so squarely first in the order of importance.

It is a site that may well be inhabited by older people in, perhaps, a slightly more vulnerable time of their lives. When untold upset can be caused by something as small as an email. Yet it is always made clear that the health of the website/business is more important than any one individual. I can't accept that. I'm not sure how ethical it is.

Money before individuals?

I have not been on here that long. The silly threads really cheer me up, there is a need for them as well as the serious topics and those giving help and advice. It is such a shame that GT's OP was not treated as a humorous lament about bl..dy slugs who happened to have originated from abroad. Get a grip people! How is the battle going GT?

Elegran Tue 07-Jun-16 09:32:06

It has turned into a chance to air our annoyances - Granjura at those she thinks PMed her with unfair criticism, and many of us at the growing snowball of preciousness appearing recently on the part of some posters who (as has said before) will walk a mile over broken glass to be offended.

A sense of proportion is a useful asset. The regulars on dedicated political threads frown when a bit of light relief is injn equal right to object when the po-faced try to bowdlerise their thread.

If we didn't have posters like jings, thatbags, kitty, phoenix and pompa, life on GN would be very boring. Soop brings humour and kindness and a nice place to be for those who need support. I love the many things they have posted and mostly in fun I think. smile

GandTea Tue 07-Jun-16 09:28:32

Yes they can Identify you by Ip address, but that may be more complex than is thought necessary. GNHQ never contacted me to say that I had used the same IP address. Some game site do this, and if you want two or more identities you have to get prior permission, ie 2 siblings playing the same game.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 07-Jun-16 09:22:48

It doesn't go by email addresses. There's something else they can identify you by. IP or something like that.

GandTea Tue 07-Jun-16 09:22:34

Tegan, stay in the conversation. I am not seeing a witch hunt, far from it, I am seeing the old crowd back and chatting again.

granjura Tue 07-Jun-16 09:22:04

Wise words Tegan- same for me too.

Will not ever change name though. Either I can be part of this community as jura- or I can't. End of.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 07-Jun-16 09:21:01

And I don't mean the reporting GNrs there.

GandTea Tue 07-Jun-16 09:20:11

In defense of GNHQ, they would not easily know if a Gner had multiple identities if each was under a different email address. I have about 6 email addresses that I use to keep things separate.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 07-Jun-16 09:19:06

You were barred gj?!!!! Why FFS?!!! The buggers! hmm

annsixty Tue 07-Jun-16 09:16:05

I have no axe to grind and no-one (well just one) has been unkind to me but any one who believes GN in not "cliquey" is deluding themselves. I have seen very indefensible posts to anyone who has disagreed with an "in"member.

Tegan Tue 07-Jun-16 09:14:18

Maybe the whole thing should have remained private, though. As it is it's turned out to be a bit of a witch hunt and given people an excuse to get their knives out against people they don't like sad.Time for a bit of 'time out' for me for a while, methinks.

Teetime Tue 07-Jun-16 09:13:03

I add to the clamour - please don't go - I have pm'd you too. flowers

GandTea Tue 07-Jun-16 09:12:23

Yes TB's, I hope GNHQ are realising that many of us want the old fun GN back. It was not always PC (in fact quite a lot of the time) but it was always respectful to others and fun, we were all friends.

granjura Tue 07-Jun-16 09:11:48

sunseeker- thanks. It just depends of course. In many cases, some members suddenly find themselves attacked by people who have changed names after flouncing with great panache- and coming back to continue same attacks under a different name. This is what I am talking about. They know who they are, and they know it is clearly against forum rules.

Weirdly enough, some who now say 'what's the problem- no har meant' are the very same that sent pms re the identity of name changers, and re the fact they were baffled by who they were.
Funny old world.

thatbags Tue 07-Jun-16 09:07:10

Yes, I presummed that was why you were contacted, PGT, but I think it was unnecessary for them to contact you at all. My point is that there was no need to change the thread title and HQ should have realised that, told the reporter so, and left it at that.

I hope HQers are reading this.

thatbags Tue 07-Jun-16 09:05:18

It could be argued that anyone who doesn't use their real name as their username is being deceptive. I'm not sure I agree that they are, but even if they are practising some kind of deception, why does it matter? Nobody is harmed by it.

GandTea Tue 07-Jun-16 09:04:47

The reason that I knew it had been reported was that GNHQ contacted me by email, as it appears they do. They did not say who had reported me or the specific reason, just that they wanted me to change the title of the thread to something that could not be complained about. What was said between myself and GNHQ will remain private, but it was cordial.
I think it reasonable that reported remain undisclosed, as people would be afraid to report.

sunseeker Tue 07-Jun-16 09:04:29

gj I am sorry you have experienced personal attacks which should never have happened and I don't know how that was resolved or if you reported it to GNHQ, however I still think that the majority of those who change names do not do so in order to deceive.

thatbags Tue 07-Jun-16 09:03:24

But you are not deceived by my name changes, jura, and nobody is deceived by Jingle's either!

Thank you, kitty smile

granjura Tue 07-Jun-16 08:59:24

It's only after one new user attacked me again and again, and in a very personal and nasty way- that others pmed to say 'well do do know who THAT is don't you?' - which is quite a shock as I had no idea- and it feels like deception. When it happens again and again, much more so.

No bee, no bonnet. It does not feel nice at all.
