anyone else celebrating 'slip over in garden while holding your grandson, fall on your shoulder and break it day?

Had a bad fall teaching GDs to ice-skate (duh! - used to be good 40 years ago....) Eventually had surgery, really commiserate about the discomfort but urge you to persevere with all treatments; the post-op physio used to make me cry, but it worked and the shoulder is fine now. Good luck! (I still hanker after ice-skating, but DD says she will have me sectioned...)

Pain slowly subsiding, roses, had many people helping out today. Very tired though, healing just takes up so much energy. Here's to a good night's sleep, hope everyone's aches and pains are few tomorrow

Yes, indinana so glad my GS wasn't hurt. Luckily I don't have to rely on my work income as I have two pensions. Not quite enough to live on but will be okay till I heal. And I've got a great support network. M0nica I'll have to check out the local hairdressers, sounds like a great idea. sloeginny sounds like your predicament is much worse, hope all goes well with your recovery process.

Oh lord, dramTessa, what a rotten piece of luck . Luckily for me, I've never had to celebrate this particular fantasy day and hope I never do. Amidst all the pain, though, you must have been so grateful that your GS survived intact - at least you haven't got that worry on your mind as well.
It's times like this that being self-employed can be a burden - no sick leave on full pay for you - so I really hope you're a fast healer, or at the very least you have a good support network. , (((((hugs))))) and loads of sympathy for you. Here's hoping it doesn't stop you operating the corkscrew

Tessa, sympathy and.When DD's right arm was disabled for three months following an accident, she spoke to her local hairdresser and arranged a special deal to go in to have her hair wahed and wet combed twice a week. I think she paid £5.00 a wash. She did start with booking a restyle appointment first, which enabled a discussion about what she had done to her arm and the problems she was having so that when she asked about regular hairwashes they were already very understanding about her predicament.

In the month before the op, I was doing a lot of physio exercises to strengthen the other muscles in my arm. On the day of the op, I had a visit from the physio and given hand exercises to keep hand, fingers, wrist and elbow moving, last week the physio added shoulder shrug/pinch and pendulum exercises, as Katek has said. These are to be done up to 10 times daily. I'm back to the physio next week, but he's already said that it will be just a progress check, they have a very strict timetable for introducing new exercises. I've got a metal implant that the torn tendons are anchored back to now, plus a tissue graft to try to strengthen them and it all has to settle in properly, so know I must be patient. The physio is going to be the key to getting the movement back I think, so I've just got to follow orders - not my usual style ?

And cherrytree - I can be a bit of a drama queen but this is excessive even for me!

The first thing I started to do was hand/wrist exercises-palm up/palm down sort of stuff. By week three I was doing shoulder shrugs and pendulum exercises. Shouid you wish to do this it's really important to work with a physio. I went privately-still waiting for the NHS appt that's never materialised!

10 days ago I fell flat on my face in the middle of a carpark. It happened very quickly but I think I tripped over GS2 (He did say sorry a lot!) Getting my priorities right my first thought was "Bugger, have I ripped these trousers" second thought was "Hope I haven't damaged my replacement knees" third thought was "Is there a car coming?" There was - but slowly! Fairly sure that I've cracked a rib but there's nothing to do but wait for it to heal, and I've got a super bruise on one knee.

Haven't we all been in the wars? Apparently, the xray shows 2 fractures one of which may need an operation. Sincerely hope it starts healing properly this week so I can avoid that. A couple of you mentioned early physio - what did this involve?

Yes, I did, holding my baby grandson. I twisted myself as I fell to protect him and he chortled, obviously enjoying the fun, and I really hurt my elbow. To make thing worse the other Grannie was there. I'm sure she thought I was drunk - I wasn't.

That baby grandson is now in his twenties and a keen weekend motorbike racer with his fair share of injuries. I think he got his taste for danger from that fall!

I had a quadruple fracture of the upper arm after slipping over on wet grass, after months of physio somebody suggested a DEXA scan and yes there was a bone problem, like Albertina think it would be good to get checked if you can persuade your GP. Hope you are better soon [flowers}

I fractured the greater tuberosity in my right shoulder about 7/8 years ago-always sounded vaguely spud like to me! Like everyone else with shoulder fracture I was just immobilised with a sling but managed to work out several coping strategies to retain my independence. No way was I being showered by anyone else! Front fastening bras are a godsend-if you lean forward to let immobile arm drop forward you can use that hand from the wrist as well as other one to do up bra. Same goes for hair washing - you can hold shampoo/gel on damaged side and use other hand for washing. Towelling dressing gown good as well-sort of swirl it round you and then you can drip dry inside it. Takes about an hour but you get a real sense of achievement! I really recommend early intervention physio- I was doing exercises from 48 hours onward and I have regained complete mobility to the surorise of the docs. I hope you start to feel better very soon. It's a complete pain when it's your dominant hand as well!

I did fall down the stairs while carrying my one year old granddaughter. She had a large bump on her head and I had cracked ribs. Not a good first birthday for granddaughter and a few weeks of painful breathing and movement for me. No long term side effects. I don't carry things down the stairs now at least not children.

Yes I totally agree Nelliemoser, I had a rotator cuff operation a few years ago and have to say following the op I had never known such pain while I was doing the recommended exercises! I also felt it would never get better but after 8wks I was back driving and back at work. Wouldn't want to go through it again though.

So sorry to hear of your fall and break. How frightening for you. I do hope you get well soon.

Just a word of warning on the subject of broken bones. I fell badly at badminton last November, but it was only at the end of January that I found out I had broken a vertebra.

I also found out through a DEXA scan that my bones are ageing badly and that I need medication for that.

I have experienced a lot of pain over the last 6 months. Breaking my bone was no fun, but through it I discovered a problem that would have only got a lot worse if not treated.

I think what I am trying to say here is two things. First get an X ray if you have had a bad fall, and have a DEXA scan to find out how your bones are ageing.

SloeGinny Ouch the rotator cuff repair is painful never mind the fractured shoulder.

I had two tendons repaired. When it is time to start exercising you do have to do as the physiotherapist says and take the pain killers before you start exercising.

I reached a point of total demoralisation when I thought it would never improve but I persevered and it did.
