Oh good heavens dramatictess and all other fracture-ees. I hope you are not in too much pain/healing well/never do it again. flowers

Alima Thu 02-Jun-16 09:24:35

Do hope it is not too long before you are better. Your grandson sounds a really charming and caring little soul.

I'm developing a 'TV antiques' habit ?

My consultant is sure I'm having him on and I actually had a fall from a horse or an argument with a tractor, but the mundane truth is that I tripped over my own feet and fell just outside the house. I've found a Tens machine and icing (10 minutes at a time) very useful pain relief between painkiller doses.

dramatictessa Thu 02-Jun-16 01:53:59

I'm watching Countdown, it's doing quite a good job of distracting me. Your shoulder op sounds nasty. How did you damage it?

SloeGinny Thu 02-Jun-16 01:36:11

Oh dear Dramatictessa, you poor thing! I'm typing this as I'm unable to sleep, having had a shoulder op just over a week ago and can't get comfortable. Mine was a dislocation and rotator cuff tears, so not quite the same, but you have all my sympathies.

The worst thing is being unable to drive, it's been about 6 weeks now and more to go. Good luck with your recovery, hope it heals fast!

dramatictessa Thu 02-Jun-16 00:51:04

Can't sleep at all so resorting to trawling through GN to take my mind off the pain. Funny how it's so much worse at night isn't it?

grannyqueenie Thu 02-Jun-16 00:27:42

Oh my word, you don't do things by halves do you! Hope you recover well and its not too painful flowers

Synonymous Wed 01-Jun-16 23:52:02

dramatictessa poor you! brew flowers
That sounds like more than enough drama for one day! Hope it heals faster than you think is possible. smile

I fell and fractured the ball part of the shoulder joint in two places. The surgeon talked about putting a pin in it but said we would give physio a try first. I only had a sling too. I was having physio less than 48 hours after the fall. Three sessions a week for eight weeks. I was in France at the time and they are far more into physio than in UK. By the time I went to the GP in UK he was astounded at the movement I had back as I could lift my arm straight up above my head. I did go to the gym almost daily for a year to build up my muscle strength - the lady there showed me the equipment to use. One thing you must do is use a weight, lean forward slightly and let the arm hang straight and then move it forward and back. This helps to realign the joint straight.
When I fell and broke my humorous on the same arm about three years ago I knew that I needed to keep my muscles moving so from about an hour after the fall I kept moving my fingers and supporting the weight of my fore arm with the other hand and moving it gently back and fore. The surgeon in UK asked me what I had been doing when after a month I could raise my arm to head height. Again I am pleased to report I have full movement back. I did have physio in France after about a month when I got back home. Again I only had a sling - sleeping is the worst thing I found.

I hope you have a good recovery -and not too much pain. Showering and dressing is a bit of a nuisance but I did find relaxing in a warm bath was very helpful - I needed help getting out though!
I didn't drive for about three months either time - but I didn't need to luckily.

dramatictessa Wed 01-Jun-16 19:39:17

is, not us - left handed typos!

dramatictessa Wed 01-Jun-16 19:38:17

My mantra in life - this us better than nothing (i.e. when you're dead)wink.

rosesarered Wed 01-Jun-16 19:35:56

Oh heck drama......this is one fantasy 'day' you could do without! hope you feel a bit better soon.?

grannyactivist Wed 01-Jun-16 19:33:58

Fortunately not - I think I'll give that one a miss dt, but glad that your sense of humour seems to have survived the fall alongside your grandson. Have some brew and [sympathy]

J52 Wed 01-Jun-16 19:21:45

I broke my right shoulder, so steering was the problem until fully functional. I did find that it was surprising how many muscles are attached to your upper arm so parts of my back ached, particularly when standing and walking.
I was very diligent about doing the physio, it's important so that you get full rotation of the limb back.
Hope you get a restful night.

dramatictessa Wed 01-Jun-16 18:54:46

4 months before you could drive again, J52? I hope it doesn't take me that long - I'm self employed(very much part time)and need the car! Anyone fancy a temp job as a chauffeur? Washing my hair is going to be a problem, it's so bloody long. Maybe this is the time to get that pixie cut I've been thinking about.

annodomini Wed 01-Jun-16 18:54:19

A friend did something similar one New Year's Eve, hosted a party while high on painkillers and bubbly! It took a long time to get back to normal. When I had a partial shoulder replacement, I had to do without a bra for weeks and wore sleeveless vests - it was a hot summer. Not a pretty sight! I hope you've got a good shoulder specialist, dramaticessa. It's a tricky joint. A good physio is also essential for recovery.

dramatictessa Wed 01-Jun-16 18:33:06

Grandson fine, kept saying 'You okay, Nana?' My DC and friends are being marvellous. Thanks for the tea and sympathy

Nelliemoser Wed 01-Jun-16 18:15:18

Oh heck that sounds dreadful.
Jalima I did the same thing carrying my baby DS down the stairs. I couldn't put my hands out to save myself. I tripped and just kept running to keep my feet under me. I hit the floor very hard with my left foot which ballooned up.
I think that accident caused a stress fracture in my lower back which set off my back problem a couple of years later.

millymouge Wed 01-Jun-16 18:14:00

Much sympathy, it sounds awlful, do hope you heal quickly. Hope the little one is O K.

J52 Wed 01-Jun-16 18:10:31

flowers how awful for you, you have my sympathy. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. Is it your right or left shoulder? They just gave me a sling thing.
I found that the most frightening bit was the inability to voluntarily move my arm, for a week or so.

Your fracture consultant will give you exercises when the trauma has subsided. I found I could only wear tops that buttoned down the front, as lifting my arm was impossible. Also I slept with the affected arm on a pillow so that I didn't roll onto it.

DH became a dab hand washing my hair and using the hair dryer. I hope you have someone to help you. It was 4 months before I could drive again.

merlotgran Wed 01-Jun-16 18:07:51

OUCH! Sounds awful tessa Hope it doesn't take too long to heal.

dustyangel Wed 01-Jun-16 18:00:59

shock How awful for you. I'm presuming this happened earlier and also that your grandson wasn't hurt.
Having broken my own shoulder a few years back I know how painful it is, so am sending lots of sympathy and healing vibes. brew cupcake

Jalima Wed 01-Jun-16 17:58:54

Oh dear!
That sounds very painful - do they plaster it up or do you just have to grin and not bear it?

flowers and hope you heal quickly and aren't in too much pain.

ps I did fall top to bottom of stairs carrying baby DD - she was fine, I was black and blue but didn't break anything.

Badenkate Wed 01-Jun-16 17:58:18

Oh dear dramatictess, I hope you're not too badly hurt - and that your grandson wasn't hurt at all! At least you should be able to get waited on for a few days, so make the most of it.
