Do you do this? I ALWAYS grill things with the oven door ajar but two of my friends watched me do this the other night and looked at me like I was mad! So...door closed or open?!

My NEFF ovens have the slide away doors so I am not sure how grill works with them. I have always had a combination microwave oven which is much easier for grilling.

Door closed, per instructions from NEFF. Works more efficiently. I went to a NEFF cooking demo and the demonstrator emphasised closed door both for efficiency & safety so I just do what she said!

Mine's a NEF and it says you must close the oven door too.

I've always thought you had to leave open while grilling because it would blow up if you didn't. I don't know why I thought that. confused It'll be the over heating thing won't it! hmm

I think if your oven's instructions say to close the door it will have a fan system to ensure the oven doesn't overheat - that's what mine does.

mine gets loads of condensation build up on glass if I shut to grill, man in shop I bought it off when I mentioned it said don't you read the book it comes with door open for grilling , door shut for oven other wise I go through loads of kitchen roll wiping the wet up

I've always grilled with the oven door open, although my new one isn't very clear about what I should be doing.

My last oven had a shield to stop the knobs getting hot and the door open when grilling , the current one has no shield and the instructions are to grill with the door closed , my eldest DS didn't believe me till I got the book out and showed him

My grill has an auto-shut off if the door is closed. I wouldn't grill with the door closed anyway - as others say, it would become an oven instead of a grill! However, I do also have a combi microwave with a grill and, being a microwave, the door must be shut before any of the functions will operate hmm.

Mine also says to leave the door open when grilling. You do need a grill pan handle but mine is removable and not at all stable when attached. hmm

No handle it's a new rule seemingly!
My Belling book says never grill with door shut.

Twobabes Tue 10-May-16 20:11:49

Yup, mine's a Neff and stipulates shutting grill door.
I usually leave it open, though, as that way I'm less likely to wander off and forget about it! Seems to work fine that way.

I have a Neff double oven and the instruction manual says to leave the top oven door closed when grilling. I've never used the main oven specifically for grilling, although it does have that function. It has a heating element in the top of the oven which I sometimes use to finish browning things but I always leave the door closed. Seems to be a wealth of conflicting information!

open! Our sil nearly set the whole house on fire with grilling bacon with door closed!

Maggiemaybe Tue 10-May-16 18:22:03

I must say I'd be happier with the grill door shut, though, when it's down at the same level as my DGS. Those eye level ones were that bit safer.

janeainsworth Tue 10-May-16 18:08:45

I have a small smart oven that sits on the worktop, from Lakeland.
It has a grill function and the door is supposed to be shut. I like it as it seems to keep the food more moist than if I use the grill on my main oven, which stipulates that the door should be open.

Ours is a Rangemaster and it came with strict and dire warnings against closing the door while grilling. I haven't a clue what would happen if I did, because I daren't grin

TriciaF Tue 10-May-16 17:44:11

I have a french gas oven, very basic, burners in the base, with an electric grill. Strict instructions in the manual to have door completely open when using the grill.
So it seems to depend on the make of oven.

Teetime Tue 10-May-16 17:36:35

My oven AEG has 'door closed' instructions for grilling and if I don't the smoke alarms go off.

suzied Tue 10-May-16 17:08:46

I have a Miele oven which has a grill. The grill does not work if the door is open. It grills things quickly so you can't go off and leave it for long.

RenataJ Tue 10-May-16 17:02:32

nina me too - who knows what could happen grin

ninathenana Tue 10-May-16 16:31:01

Annoyingly my grill pan doesn't have a handle. The instructions say "never have the door closed when the oven is set to grill" I always obey instructions smile

RenataJ Tue 10-May-16 16:26:47

THANK YOU!! I feel most vindicated now, after their laughing grin

shysal Tue 10-May-16 16:25:54

Always leave the door of my Neff ajar. On a previous oven the grill wouldn't work if the door was closed.

Purpledaffodil Tue 10-May-16 16:14:53

Used to have an Aeg oven. You had to leave the door open when grilling and there was a metal baffle to protect the knobs. Now have a much cheaper Hotpoint oven and the instructions say to close the oven door when grilling. So I do. I also have a Panasonic microwave where the grill can be used on its own, obviously the door is closed when the grill is operational.
TBH I have not noticed any difference in grilling quality or time taken. I presume that the various grills are calibrated to allow for closed or open oven doors.
