What's the scariest thing you've done?

A few years ago my aunt did a hot air balloon ride for her 80th birthday. She absolutely loved it and only regretted not doing it earlier. I think the scariest thing I've ever done is stand up to my boss when they were harassing me. Or when I was left alone with my new grandchild for the first time terrified I was going to break him. Clearly I need to be more adventurous - is it too late do you think?

It's only scary looking back; in my 20s I was fearless. I nonchalantly drove around the roads of Kenya on my own. I'd be horrified if I heard of my GD doing the same nowadays.

Doing a scuba dive in Greece when I was 50. I went along in the boat just for the ride, as my daughters were going to do the dive. I didn't listen to any of the briefing. When we got to the dive beach, my daughters persuaded me to go in too, despite the fact that I was absolutely terrified, and I'm not that keen on swimming either! As I hadn't listened to the briefing, I had no idea what to do! However, it was actually OK, although I don't think I would do it again.

Abseiling from the Tyne Bridge (for charity) and from a Cumbrian railway viaduct (on an adventure weekend) was quite scary, but more because I have a bit of a thing about bridges, than the actual rope dangling thing.

The scariest moments of my life were on my adult's trike, it's a brilliant machine and I love him to bits, but...

In the winter of 2003/4 we had a lot of snow and ice. I used the trike to ride to work and kept off the roads, sticking to cycle paths. One morning the cycle path leading offroad down a steep river valley was very icy, so I decided to ride down a short steep path and along the pavement alongside a really busy road.

The path had packed icy snow on it and the trike slid out of control. I managed to get it on to the grassy bank alongside the path, dug in my feet and prayed. We slid to a halt against the trunk of a tree.

Eventually I walked the trike back up the road and walked with it down the less steep footpath on the other side of the road towards work. I went in to work as normal. My heart rate went through the roof during the few seconds I was sliding out of control towards the busy traffic.

I've had other scary moments involving my barsteward of an ex-husband, but I wouldn't want to give anyone a flashback or put them in a bad place.

My scariest thing is quite tame compared to all of yours ! In the 1960's at a midnight performance of the film The Innocents.
Due to the excellent direction and editing there were parts that were really scary and girls were screaming in the cinema. Got home around 2am and I just couldnt get it out of my mind !

Being caught in a terrific rain and hail storm in Spain, driving on a motorway - which was frightening enough - but when we turned off the motorway and into a coastal village we turned straight into a flood from the surrounding hills.

When I saw double wheelie bins and cars were being swept towards us, I jumped out of the car (the water was at wheel height) and was pulled to safety by locals - left husband to it (he still dines out on that one). Found each other some time later, he had kept his head, reversed out of the flood zone with moments to spare and left the car in a safer part of town. We were both soaked to the skin, there was no electricity, all the hotels pulled together to feed and accommodate guests. A proper candlelit dinner. Come to think of it, it was exhilarating grin

Honestly, Nansue, The operation itself is okay! I had very little pain afterwards. I know it's scary, the very idea but the surgeons are brilliant these days. The second day after mine, I was walking round all the shops in the concourse. [Addenbrookes}

I'm awaiting my next MRI brain scan but not until July. I've had so many that I actually find it's a good excuse to have a lie down! smile but the scariest thing was last month, when I was told they think it may be time to remove the benign brain tumour soon it as it has grown.shock

I abseiled down Avon gorge in 2008 - the big high bit! I was so scared I almost lost control of my bowels, but I'm so proud of myself for having done it! grin

I'm feeling quite brave at the moment as I've just come back from having tattoo recoloured that I first had done 20 years ago! It's taken me years to work up the courage to go back and it was very pale a faded looking. So glad I finally made it, although I did make my daughter come with me for moral support. The lady who came out just before me was 74 and having her first tattoo apparently!

EEJit Fri 29-Apr-16 15:26:02

Retired.

Yes, Jings, I did wonder if it was wise to post about the scan. Sorry if it's scared anyone. It's only if you're claustrophobic it would bother anyone. The opened ended scans are no bother.

Petra, a similar thing happened to my DH and I on the Islay ferry early in the morning. The ferry seemed to turn right on to its side. There were only a few passengers, we were all terrified, even the crew looked worried.
I think that cycling home from a local beauty spot in a thunderstorm was the scariest thing I've done. I was about 13, and the lightning was flashing all around us.

Working in London during the Blitz.

Sailing across the North Sea in a 32ft yatch. We got caught in a squall in very bad weather, the boat was whipped round 360degs and the wind and the rain was really harsh. I was absolutely petrified. Not a religious person but I had a few words with him upstairs that day.

rafichagran Fri 29-Apr-16 13:50:55

Doing a parachute jump to conquer my fear of heights, done this alone and not a tandem.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 29-Apr-16 13:31:35

(not you wot)

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 29-Apr-16 13:31:20

Well, I hope there are no Gransnetters awaiting a date for a brain scan after reading that post. hmm

Very sensitive I'm sure.

wot Fri 29-Apr-16 13:26:45

I would do the brain MR I thing again if I had to BUT I would insist on a button I could press which would bring me out of the tunnel immediately! It's crazy to think that that was the worst thing about having one's skull opened! Which happened after the angiogram and MRI. Before these things, people weren't even aware that they were living with a timebomb, so should be grateful, I suppose.

grandmac Fri 29-Apr-16 13:14:55

wot Yes I have recently had a brain MRI (awaiting results) and it was horrible. That tiny head cage and then the all enveloping tube! On tele they have soft music playing and are able to talk to the radiographers but all I had was the horrendous noises of the machine! I began to feel I was the only person left in the world! Stupid I know. And we are lucky to have access to free diagnostic tests such as MRI so must stop complaining.
In my 20's I went alone to the middle east on a bus from Munich. Interesting journey in many ways!! blush
Then lived through a revolution with 2 small children, including a memorable car journey travelling behind a military truck that had men crouched in the firing position behind a machine gun pointing straight into our car. shock We were praying they didn't go over a bump!
Oh happy days!

In our late 50s me, my hubby and three friends rode classic Lambretta and Vespa scooters across France into Switzerland over the Alps and down into Italy and back, it was the best and most amazing trip and also the scariest ever. So wish we could do it again but age and ill health has caught up with us and it is out of the question. But we have the memories.
