That's the problem, though, and why they get away with poor service.

We opened a Nationwide account at a local branch. The next week the branch had shut down, we went to another about 20 minutes away, then that one shut down.

I think they are all as bad a s each other. It is a matter of luck whether the local branch of whatever bank you are with gives good advice or closes down.

I am currently with the Nationwide having previously been with Barclays and then Royal Bank of Scotland. I had intended to move to the Co-op Bank, but they closed their local office when they closed the Co-op so Ntionwide it is. The only large building society to remain a mutual and not privatise in the 1980s.

Just rhe mention of Barely has my blood boiling.

Have you brought this fact before the top officials of the bank. Three months back I also faced similar position. My debit card was valid up to January, 28,2016 and I applied for its renew. Every time on one pretext or the other bank officials were delaying the matter. In this way they have passed one month.For their doings I want to speak to the top official of the organisation and I called Barclays Customer Service here qwikfix.co.uk/barclays/ and told them to connect my phone to the the top authority and they did accordingly. I apprised him all the facts and the harassment faced by me. He listened me with patience and feel sorry for their acts and assured me to clear my case with in 2 to 3 hours. He fulfilled his promise and with in 2 hrs I received a call from bank that I'll receive my renewed card with in 24 hrs. With in promised period renewed card was at my door.

I don't understand why you would need to apply for a renewed card derekbrian . I'm with Barclays and when my debit card is approaching it's expiry date a new card always arrives automatically. I've never had to apply!

We are with Barclays and, while we haven't had any particular problems with them (that statement will probably come under the heading of tempting fate!!), we have been alarmed at the rate at which they have closed their branches down. We now have a half hour drive to get to our nearest branch, and the only branch now in the city centre - the main branch - has no counter staff, only machines, and someone on hand in case you develop machine rage (something DH is prone to)! I suppose Barclays aren't the only ones who are doing this. They are trying to get everyone to go over to online banking, I suppose. Not for me I'm afraid.

Online banking is all very well (I've used it for years). But you can't pay cheques in online!

I don't trust online banking. We've been with Nat West for 40+ years with only a couple of minor hiccups.

I am very happy with online banking, but cheques are the bugbear. Some bank have self service machines that allow you to pay them into your account, but I've only seen them in branch so far.

I've had it with Barclays. I've been with them since they took over the Woolwich (I had a mortgage with Woolwich). I tried to remortgage at the end if the term, and thanks to mistakes and inefficiency my application fell through.

In my city there are no tellers in the main branch. Every time I go into my local branch the staff encourage me to do online banking, which I don't want to do.

I'm looking for a replacement bank, but they all serm to be going the same way.

I have had an account with the Halifax for about 40 years - started with a Savings account and opened a bank account when they became a bank 25 years ago. We are still very happy with them. Their online banking is very easy to follow and if you phone the staff answering have a delightfully Yorkshire or Scottish accent. They can also do things for you if you have had a problem. They also pay a bonus monthly on both current and credit accounts - there are qualifying rules for this but I am unsure what they are now.
Living in France we find that fact that they do not charge for a foreign currency transaction on one of their credit cards wonderful. It means that we can still use our card for day to day stuff as well as holidays and pay in sterling - the exchange rate is always good and about mid- rate. We are required to have our pensions paid into a UK bank as they are State or classed as Govt so this is all very suitable for us (we pay tax still in UK and then more in France despite the tax agreement).
French banks are in the main difficult to deal with - they don't do as they say and it took us months to close an account. We now have a French Post office account (LA Poste) which I keep simple and use to pay bills with cheques - here you still see cheques being used regularly in the supermarkets. Also French banks have a Cartebleu which seems to be more of a debit card than a credit card and only the one type.
So far the two Halifax branches I use when back in UK are still open and have real people as well as machines. The only quibble I have is that the shares I was given when they changed to a bank did rise to a high and I did not need the money at the time so I kept them and of course in 2008 they fell to zero and are still about the same.
The lack of bank branches which is becoming so prevalent in UK is a worrying trend - there must be some way they can co-operate to provide a service. At times there is a comfort in being able to go and speak to someone face to face. The last place we lived in UK had a mobile Nat West Bank which came once a week - certain things you could do with them even if it was an account at a different bank.

With regard to the paying in of cheques can you post them? I have to do it from here if anyone sends me one - I send it to the branch I opened the account with and so far never had a problem.

I would NEVER bank with BARCLAYS. My late DH worked for them for 27 years before he ,and the whole of his department were made redundant,with no promise of jobs elsewhere. Conseqently my DH was unable to find another equivalent job and financial problems followed . I am still feeling the effects of this by having to sell the family home very quickly and then only being able to rent. I have to move yet again this week .The last thing I need to do!
Barclays treated their staff very badly and from previous posts it seems they are far from helpful to their customers as well.

From what I can see of my local branches, Barclays is determined to function with as few staff as possible. I feel so sorry for the tellers and the rest of the frontline staff.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm one of those sorts who likes to have some sort of human connection at the bank. It's not because I don't want to bank online. I just want some human contact. Is that really too much to ask, Barclays?
