Annie, the English person who expected you to speak English in Wales was rude and arrogant, but people like this exist everywhere, unfortunately. When we lived in Germany, a good friend of ours, who plays in the Hamburg Philharmonic, was kind enough to host two Welsh music students on a week-long exchange visit. They spoke no German, so he arranged for us to meet up for a night out, thinking they would enjoy it. As soon as they found out we were English, they actually picked up their chairs, turned them so that their backs were facing us, and spent the evening conversing to each other in Welsh. Our friend was astounded by their rudeness. The three of us had a pleasant evening anyway, chatting in German, and then our friend was allowed to drive them back to his house when they were ready to go. They had to make their pints last, as they obviously didn't want to lose face by ordering more in English
