Loneliness can be a real problem and trying to deal with it on your own can be very challenging. Needing at least one other person, preferably more, to go to a sporting and/or social event appears to be the most common want of the lonely.
I belong to a Club in Melton Mowbray which for all intents and purposes is an Indoor Bowls Club, but in reality it is a social facility that caters for many lonely people. Whether shy, widowed, single, disabled or whatever reason for loneliness this Club and many like it provides a community service that many ex-loners use to mix with others with similar problems and play an activity that caters for all.
The BIG STEP is to make contact, go to the Club and let the Meeters and Greeters help you to integrate from day one.
Once in, the vast majority stay and thank themselves and all concerned for providing an on-going facility which they wished they knew about many years before.
My Club has well advertised Open Days which you can pop in, have a look around and try out the sport. In addition it has many Club Members who volunteer to connect with non-members to encourage them get to the Club and give it a go.
This applies to many other sports and social clubs but Indoor Bowls can cater for all comers, all ages and abilities and disabilities including wheel chair users, hearing and sight impairment people, learning difficulties/intellectual impairment etc. In some cases special equipment may be needed but every effort will be made to help all attendees to integrate and be treated the same as all other Club Members.
Initially there are no cost implications as all equipment will be provided for up to one month. Thereafter you can make your mind up whether you wish to join or not. Membership is £55 a year and rink fees are £2.50 per 2 hour session.
So if you are a Melton & District resident why not contact me and take things from there. If you are not a Melton & District resident there will be Bowls Clubs in your area with similar facilities and offers.
