After seeing last nights programme about keeping young I realised how unfit I am. They were asking people to cross legs at the ankles and then sit down on the floor without using their hands to balance. Angela Rippon at 71 managed it beautifully but alas when I tried I could only get half way.
I have resolved to alter my diet and take more exercise, but where do you start? I would love to do a dance class but would look very silly I know as would not be able to keep up and I expect wouldn`t last for long before I had to sit down! This morning I tried dancing to the radio and lasted about 3 mins. If anyone has any words of wisdom for me I would be grateful or is there anyone who would like to join me on a quest to eat and live better from a standing start.

Rowantree you can't see visceral fat - even if you are thin you can have abnormal amounts around your organs. It's known as TOFI - Thin Outside Fat Inside and it's the reason people who seem slim develop heart disease or type 2 diabetes which us normally associated with being overweight.

You need to keep visceral fat down to less than 12.5%

Don't think I could have done this at 50 so no hope at 70!! My mother (94) told me about this programme. In her words Angela Rippon ,without her make up, "Looked older than I do!!" I will have to watch it.

I chose not to watch it on the understanding that " the horse had already bolted"and I could never be as fit as Angela Rippon. I will just plod on as normal.

So was I, jingl ! But it doesn't need a scan to see mine...does anyone know, by the way, how you know if you have a fatty liver? I'm worrying that I have one.....everything else about me is fatty, so my liver surely must be too? :-(

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 19:57:01

I was just a little bit delighted when the scan showed all her visceral fat. shock

NonnaW Fri 08-Apr-16 19:39:50

Thank you Anya, I shall look for it later.

Well done Susied! The last time I could do that I was in the Brownies. I go to a stretch and dance class,Zumba , aerobics and Aquafit ,all for over fifties. It's great fun especially the stretch and dance class. I must watch that programme next week.

And me gran

or when you've just had a knee replacement either ;)

Is it just me or ...

who finds Angela Rippon sooooo annoying. I do admire her figure, etc, but her manner really grates with me, and has always done.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 17:48:27

Don't try that getting down and up thing when you need a wee. hmm

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 17:31:00

suzied I am very impressed!!
I am impressed by the fact that you filmed yourself doing the challenge and put it on YouTube!! Wow grin
(and doing the challenge, of course).

I shall practise by getting up and down from DS's sofa later on this evening (much lower than mine).

I'm not worrying about next weeks programme, after watching this weeks, I'm unlikely to make next week. hmm Like you Annegran, I'm putting my affairs in order - fast.

AnneGran Fri 08-Apr-16 16:56:49

I am starting to put my affairs in order after watching that programme! I always thought I was reasonably fit but there is no way I am trying the sit down/get up thing in case I fall and break my hip! And as for the hidden fat, very scary. The fat you can see is bad enough. ?

I've just started walking rescue greyhounds. I ached all over next day, but in a good way. Dog wrangling is far more of a 'whole body' workout than a gentle stroll :D

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:48:19

Sorry that should be to NonnaW

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:46:13

Next week it's about the brain and more scary stuff about our marbles and where we might have misplaced them hmm

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:43:37

Nonnie ir was called How to Stay Young and was on BBC1 last night at 9.00pm I think.

Penstemmon Fri 08-Apr-16 16:35:27

I would have lost 2 points I think! I can get down but only get up by using a knee and bit of a wobble!! I am working on it.

Just had a bit of a jig to Bellowhead music!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 16:33:32

Thank you suzie. That's great! (Love your pussy cat) smile

I just tried it again. Got down ok but again wobbled on the landing. No way could I ever get up again. I have been digging the garden though. So a bit knackered. Don't think I'm built for it though TBH.

TriciaF Fri 08-Apr-16 16:17:34

Well done Suzie - I think your cat was worried about you wink.
I wouldn't even try it - I have to hang onto something when lowering myself to the floor, and even more when getting up.

The Mumsnet thread's hilarious. One of their OH's broke the dining room table and another's wrenched a radiator off the wall. I don't think I'll mention this to my DH.

Brummiegran Fri 08-Apr-16 16:09:02

Thank you Suzied! I'll tryflowers

BarbaraAbbs Fri 08-Apr-16 16:06:59

Is there someone who made this programme that you can ask for an alternative test? Having had two hip replacements and a knee, and then two hip dislocations, I am obviously for the knackers yard as dare not even start this manoeuvre but still seem to be here.

fillygumbo Fri 08-Apr-16 16:06:51

thank you all, reminded me of the time I went with dd to aqua aerobics we were doubled up laughing at my lack of coordination, I seemed to be doing the exact opposite to everyone else, alas she refuses to go with me again.
I am going to try the zumba gold, I shall hide at the back of the room.
