Both a friend's daughter and a relative had drinks spiked, one in a ski resort, one in a local bar near her home. Neither remembers much about what subsequently happened and both were badly disturbed afterwards.
Both were responsible young women whom one would not have expected to be vulnerable. It really could happen to anyone's daughter.

Ds while at uni used to take off, he went with another student sometimes but said it was better on your own. Met lots of other international travellers. Visited the Baltic states,

Then Found a deal for £5 ticket that took him to Poland, a train across the country and back again. On the train he jammed the door to his carriage to keep it locked shut while he slept.
He also went to India for 3 months with one small backpack and came home with a beard down onto his chest wearing well worn shabby clothes and boots falling apart. Said it was important to look like you had nothing of value.

DD went at 18 to Crete (or Rhodes? can't remember now) with a friend of 19, other DD went when she was 17 to Ibiza with another 17 year old and a 20 year old.
DD also worked abroad at 18 in her gap year and travelled to the other side of the world with a friend.

Spiking can happen here too (and does!).

I would certainly warn her about spiking. My son's girlfriend went to Budapest (her home town!) on holiday and ended up in hospital after her drink was spiked - and she was nearly 40 so age has no bearing on it.

Big hug - tell her to have a good time.

I know it is hard. DD went on a trip to Thailand with some other girls and all we could do was keep reminding ourselves that she had her head screwed on. The night she left, we turned on the news and saw that Thailand was flooded, including the airport where she was to land! She was, as we knew, very sensible and took the trouble to phone us to let us know she was safe - she had had to change her itinerary but they all had a wonderful time - trip of a lifetime.

So hard to let them go, I know.

As * obieone* says! No one ever thinks anything will happen to them and most of the time they are right but being watchful is wise. And wish her Bon voyage of course! smile

Roaming, travel insurance, not going off by herself. I would tell her.

Thanks for your replies and reassurances. She will be 20 in Sept Petra. Her Mum didn't go away with friends as she met her DH very young. Yes I will smile and wish her bonne vacance and God speed too. And Tanith a cash card along with the hug and kiss

Sorry to add this but my concern would be spiking ,( I know someone it happened to )

Don`t forget to tell her not to leave her drink unattended .

Otherwise I am sure she will be fine , it is always worrying the first time they go on holiday .

How old is DGD? Did your DD go off on holiday with her friends?
Try not to worry, most young people come back completely unscathed.

Give her a hug and kiss and wish her a fantastic time, I'm sure her parents will of drummed all the 'boring' stuff into her enough times.

Eldest DGD, at Uni, is off to Malia on Crete this summer for a week with 5 other young women. I KNOW she is sensible and tells me the others are all lovely too. . . . . .but I can't help being concerned. In Crete a few years ago we drove through Malia and thought it looked like the Wild Westsad! You hear such awful stories about drink and drugs. We know she will behave herself but that doesn't stop me being concerned about her. I want to advise her about so many things, personal safety, no alcohol before the sun goes down and then with a meal if poss, keeping cash and valuables safe too. Not inviting anyone else back to their apartment. Looking out for each other. The list is endless. Or should I just kidnap her and keep her at home? Lol! Her parents, our DD and SIL have made such a good job of bringing her up so I know in my heart she'll be fine. . . .
