Is it just me or do young people today talk so fast as to be unintelligible at times? I find it quite hard to keep up with what my granddaughters are saying, and this morning I was listening to the Andrew Marr programme on radio 4 where the guest was speaking so fast that it was just gabble. The other guests spoke much more slowly. You would think that program producers would give gabblers a quiet signal to slow down a bit so that we could take in what they are saying. Imagine what Churchill's speeches would have been like at twice the speed.

. I know how and why I started talking rapidly - I had two older siblings and when I was learning to talk they, very helpfully (!) would finish my sentences for me, something which drove me to distraction, young as I was.
