Admiration for Jo Brand

I just cannot imagine what she is going through at the moment on her walk across the country. Looking at the map and the reports, she is coming over the Woodhead Pass in the Peak District in this horrible weather. I found it difficult at times taking the dogs for a walk this morning in the wind so what it must be like up there....! Like her or loathe her, I think you have to admire a middle-aged, over-weight, unfit woman having the guts to take on a challenge like this ❤

Well said, loopylou! Jo's no mug, and neither am I. I'll be donating.

Well done Jo but like many others I abhor the waste of energy.

Once, while waiting to cross the road in Toronto we were looking up at a whole bank of fit young women peddling away furiously on exercise bikes in the brightly lit windows of the YWCA gym. A passing Policeman remarked to us 'Isn't that a wonderful sight - do you know they are powering all the street lights in Toronto?' He was joking, of course, but the idea was very appealing. All the energy being produced could at least have powered the lighting in the huge YWCA.

I have never been able to understand the mind set of people who DRIVE to a gym and pay good money to WALK on a treadmill, when they could walk to the shops and back carrying a couple of heavy bags, deliver charity leaflets (paper is heavy and lots of stairs to climb) or even better walk through the woods collecting fallen branches or pine cones, haul them home and complete the fitness workout by sawing/chopping them into logs and firewood. I know a young mother who has 'no time' to maintain her own large garden and pays someone to tend it. She does however have time to go to the gym EVERY DAY to exercise and swim while a paid childminder looks after her baby and toddler (and she continually pleads poverty). It seems like madness to me as she could be getting all the exercise she needs in her own garden, with her children 'helping' and as a bonus, growing their own fruit, veg and flowers.

When there is so much that used to be done in the community by the young and fit- clearing snow, collecting and delivering wood to the elderly, digging their gardens, fishing and sharing out the catch - today it seems to be all ME, ME, ME. Sorry about the rant - good to get it off my chest.

Nearly 60! Good for her. Did she do any training before she took this on? If not Blimey is the word -she will be mighty stiff

"Good on Ya" Jo Brand how I envy you, only wish that you had taken me with you, bad weather or not at the end of the journey you will of course feel beaten about but, the elation and satisfaction will be well worth all the trudging against the weathers etc, etc. Next time you have "a bee in your bonnet" for a walking spree, please, please contact me and I will willingly be your travel companion, (providing of course that my present health) prevails, I am past my sell by date but in good health to date, and looking for a walking adventure.

Well Done Jo Brand

I dont think there is anything wrong with well known people highlighting poor or difficult situations and living a "luxurious" lifestyle themseves. How else should they live ? If theyve worked for their wealth and paid their taxes then thats fine by me.
The thing that gets me mad is wealthy people still living in their "council flat or house" and stupid commentators who commend them for it. Get out; buy a home;
therefore giving another person the chance to move up another notch on their housing waiting list !!

Besides humour and common sense, Jo Brand has guts.

I am a massive fan of Jo Brand and always have been, her support of /awareness raising over mental / women's health issues is first class. She's one of the good guys.
Jo's challenge is the latest in a lengthening line of endurance feats by celebrities to raise cash for Sport Relief; David Walliams (Channel swim, Thames swim), Eddie Izzard, Davina McCall, John Bishop...
It brings the money in for charity, I have very mixed feelings on making famous people suffer for money, but lots of non - famous people do the same thing.

I've put my money where my mouth is, I've sponsored Jo, (twice so far), Sport Relief & Comic Relief support some fantastic projects, I know my money will be well used.

I don't envy her, looking out on the dreadful weather from my cosy sitting room if it's as bad there as it is here.

SwimHome Wed 27-Jan-16 11:09:54

All power to Jo Brand in what she is doing, she is a thoughtful lady and would not be doing this if there were a better way for her to help, you can be sure. Also love and praise to the totally unsung people who are walking stages with her for no publicity (Edana Minghella for one)

I remember her answering the phone to me on Children In Need, she was lovely, a genuine, caring person who does so much for charity. Aggie don't be mean even if she does go home to her celebrity home , she doesn't have to support charity events. Celebs are just giving something back.

I am looking forward to wishing Jo well as she goes through Lymm.
She deserves support and Sports relief does fantastic work here and abroad.
Good to see we mature ones having a go.

henetha Wed 27-Jan-16 10:46:31

Huge admiration for Jo Brand and total support for what she is doing to raise money for Comic Relief. The total so far this morning was over four hundred thousand. I don't think she would get that for digging gardens or whatever. Good luck to her, I say.

Skullduggery Wed 27-Jan-16 10:43:22

I like Jo enormously, especially when she let Trinny & Tranny give her a make-over. That was hilarious.

She comes across as a feisty determined lady and I hope she completes the walk without serious ill effects.

GO JO!

spabbygirl Wed 27-Jan-16 10:31:08

Jo is brilliant. I didn't know what she was doing but I wish her all the best!

Alima Wed 27-Jan-16 10:24:48

We saw her a few years ago at our local theatre. She was very funny! Full of admiration for her doing the walk. (I am not keen on Alex from the One Show, find her irritating. Couldn't believe how she managed to overcome her fear of heights to climb that sheer rock a year or so ago for one of the charities. Certainly went up (no pun intended!) in my opinion after that.

grannyjack Wed 27-Jan-16 10:23:29

I have a lot of time for Jo Brand. 20 or so years ago we shared a stage in Brighton talking at a women's health event. She knows her stuff - like me was a psychiatric nurse. Although she delivered responses to questions with humour it was also with knowledge. I also have seen her a couple of times in a certain London park cheering her kids on playing sport & mixing with other parents.
She has a career presenting herself in a certain way that you may not like but that is not the sum total of her. And she is raising lot of money for charity!

nanakate Wed 27-Jan-16 10:18:01

I wonder whether she is doing it at this time of year because it's the only time she has available from her comedy circuit. I knew her slightly many years ago before she became famous, and believe me she is the last person you would have thought would do something like this! So it is inspiring to think that even when you are older you can take on something completely opposite to type and discover new things about yourself.

Sadiesnan Wed 27-Jan-16 10:17:11

I really like Jo Brand, good luck to her.

loopylou Wed 27-Jan-16 09:58:20

?
What's she ever done to you to deserve a comment like that!?

Eloethan Wed 27-Jan-16 09:55:34

She may not be your cup of tea but why "bloody awful"?

Marmark1 Wed 27-Jan-16 09:13:42

sorry,bleddy awful woman,

Greyduster Tue 26-Jan-16 19:45:04

My son and three of his friends - very fit young servicemen - walked the Pembrokeshire coast path for charity, 187 miles, in six days, but in July, with all but the first couple of days in glorious weather. He said if they hadn't had the weather, they would probably not have completed it in the time, but they would never have attempted it in winter.

You can follow her progress (and donate if you wish) on the link above

Jalima Tue 26-Jan-16 19:42:25

Well, I wouldn't be checking on her progress if she was digging someone's garden, unless it was mine.

Jalima Tue 26-Jan-16 19:39:47

regular medical checks and an accompanying group means it isn't exactly a cost effective method of extracting money
Don't worry, Aggie the cost is probably coming out of our tv licences wink

Must check up on how she is doing. She may inspire me to do more walking (when the weather is better).
