My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

Have a nice evening ethel smile

jogginggirl Sat 09-Jan-16 23:17:54

It's not a fish etheltbags - it's a 'titanic' shaped ice cube together with a couple of icebergs - one of the grand-daughters bought it for DH at Christmas - he was amused tcrgrin

NanKate - it's an ice cube mould in iceberg and titanic shapes - it's a bit of fun - and, as you know, you have to make your own fun when you're on a dry month ?tcrgrin ... There's an Amazon link further up in case you're in need of jazzing up your tipple ?tcrgrin

Whoops fell off the wagon! No excuse I know but DH cooked such a lovely meal last night served up Master Chef style that I could not accompany it with just a glass of water!! Felt a bit unappreciative really. We did drink less though, less than half a bottle between us and really enjoyed it, rather than just drinking it and puring another one. The trouble is there is now another half bottle to finish tonight with the roast dinner! Think we might revise dry january to one bottle a week January!! A cop out I know but but so nice.

Anyone else fallen off yet?

suzied Sun 10-Jan-16 09:30:29

You could just add a couple of days extra at the end to make up the days. Or just stick to no drinking Monday- Friday. So do a "damp January ".! But try not to use it as an excuse to slip back into old habits if you want to avoid that. I have made it to day 10, trying not to sound too virtuous, but we haven't been out anywhere and have put all the post Christmas / NY wine in the garage so avoiding temptation, and my OH is doing it with me so it's a bit easier.

Anya Sun 10-Jan-16 09:44:31

Perhaps pour the rest of the wine down the sink or freeze it into ice cubes. It doesn't have to be the end.

I've declared, in advance, I'll be drinking on 22nd & 23rd as it's my birthday and friends are coming down from Cumbria ( by canoe?)

So I won't be completely dry, just 'damp ' as suzied so quaintly put it grin

villagefox Sun 10-Jan-16 11:47:42

I have been doing Dry January and have lost weight and feel great! Only ten days down and might not make it to the end but feeling motivated to continue so far.

grannyqueenie Sun 10-Jan-16 13:28:41

That communion wine did taste good this morning.....felt like having an extra swig....hmm, maybe I'm missing it more than I thought! shock

Anya Sun 10-Jan-16 13:54:02

shock

NanKate Sun 10-Jan-16 15:17:53

I think Jg sucking an iceberg or the Titanic may not be for me.

I realise that the anticipation of a nice glass of wine is missing in my life, but heyho I can do it.

We are going to a 70th birthday lunch on the 30th but I am not going to waver.

My DH who is virtually teetotal, can't understand all the complaints I am making. I am sure if I got him to give up strong coffee he would have a fit, but so would I. shock

Anya I was thinking how romantic canoeing down to yours for your B'day and then I realised you could be joking. Is it to do with the floods ?

Cambia Sun 10-Jan-16 21:01:45

Good idea suszi
ed, think we will have a damp January! DH a bit grumpy after eight days, think it was more my idea than his! Will go alcohol free Mon - Fri and just have a bottle between Sat/Sunday. Might run this into Feb to make up for only being damp not dry!!!

glassortwo Sun 10-Jan-16 21:43:32

Well 10 days in and I cant say I have missed my glass or two, how is everyone else doing? DD seems to be struggling a bit grin

jogginggirl Sun 10-Jan-16 23:29:37

Dry day 10 done tcrgrin

Well done to everyone grin - this is becoming a supportive thread - it doesn't matter how long any of us go for - no judgements, no criticism - just encouragement - keep on keeping on ....?

No sucking icebergs or the Titanic NanKate - just kidding myself that I was drinking a fancy cocktail ... LOL - I wish wink

A damp January - susied, cambia, Anya - now why didn't I think of that ... hmm

NanKate Mon 11-Jan-16 06:35:02

I could murder a fancy cocktail Jg maybe a nice mojito with your iceberg in it with plenty of mint and rum of course grin. Not at this time of day of course maybe around 6.00pm with a nibble or two to go with it.

I wonder how teetotal people celebrate ?

Anya Mon 11-Jan-16 06:57:24

Yes NanKate the friends live near Cockermouth!

I've not been sleeping too well and read somewhere that cherry juice can help. Managed to track some down and added diet tonic water. Not too bad at all and did sleep better. I'm going to try coconut water and a slice of lime and see if I can pretend that's a pina colada.

Well done everyone tcrgrin and yes! this is turning into a nice supportive thread. .

NanKate Mon 11-Jan-16 19:34:10

I'm looking forward to getting half way through the month which by my reckoning should be noon on Friday the 15th.

I realise that I give myself a glass of something as a reward eg

Having looked after the GSs
A long tiring day
To celebrate an event

I must admit I am finding things a bit boring without a tipple.

Onward and upward.

Greyduster Mon 11-Jan-16 19:54:40

When we were up at DS's this weekend he presented me with an apple and raspberry J2O in a particularly nice wine glass. "Just pretend it's a nice glass of red!" he said. Yea, right!?

jogginggirl Mon 11-Jan-16 23:54:23

Well, it's the thought that counts Greyduster ... hmm

Dry day 11 - who would have thought it ...no wine tcrgrin

Elrel Tue 12-Jan-16 14:54:08

Sooo unfair! At our library BookClub this morning we were discussing a book set in the lovely warm South of France, Celia Imrie's Not Quite Nice. We shared French food and were provided with red wine. After my morning drink of water I really wanted some but somehow managed not to crack! Anyway it gave me an opportunity to say I'd be passing the hat around for WaterAid at out February meeting!

NanKate Tue 12-Jan-16 16:38:58

I am thinking of organising a virtual drinks party on 1st February. I would expect contributions of nibbles and your choice of drink (only one as it could hit us rather hard after a month of abstinence).

Greyduster Tue 12-Jan-16 18:41:55

Count me in! I think we have some twiglets left over from Christmas! At the moment i wish there was a non-alcoholic equivalent of a hot whisky toddy, though! ?

NanKate Tue 12-Jan-16 19:09:01

Yes it's bl**dy miserable isn't Greyduster. I suppose we could give you a medical dispensation so that you could have your hot toddy, but of course this would have to be sanctioned by the Pope grin

NanKate Wed 13-Jan-16 18:34:39

Had a stressful afternoon and would have relaxed after a nice alcoholic drink but just had to grin and bear it hmm.

Roll on 1st Feb.

baNANAGran3 Wed 13-Jan-16 21:42:38

NanKate brilliant idea, I would like to join the virtual drinks party on 1st February if that's ok. I have some advocaat left over from Christmas which keeps winking at me so think I would make a snowball, although a g & t sounds good. Have some pretzels so could contribute those. Have heard of someone who fills a glass with ice and tonic and wipes the rim with gin soaked kitchen paper so it smells of gin when drinking. Not sure if this is allowed, what do others think? Good to hear that Friday is half way - cheers!
