Diversity

Soontobe has made a point that there should be more diversity on GN.
What do others think?
It is a tricky one because first of all GN is open to all who choose to contribute, but obviously self-selecting to a degree just by the site name and target group.
It is also hard to establish the degree of diversity among members as we retain anonymity and are under no obligation to reveal or even refer to ethnic background, religious affiliation, physical or any other disability, political inclination ( well some people are very clear on that, but not necessarily all) education, age, colour or shoe size.
So who's to say?
Does it really matter?

This thread seems to be headed for more unpleasantness, so having briefly looked in, am leaving.✈️

kittylester Mon 14-Dec-15 17:33:49

Fortuitously, an Asian person (female!) has started a thread on 'care'.

thatbags Mon 14-Dec-15 17:56:35

Does anyone have a really good duck emoji? Bung it on this thread if you do, please.

Galen Mon 14-Dec-15 18:00:32

?sorry no! But here's the Invisible Pink Unicorn for you!

granjura Mon 14-Dec-15 18:13:24

Now I often do not agree with soon- but I do wish you'd stop this witch-hunt, really!

Iam64 Mon 14-Dec-15 18:39:24

I don't want to be petty granjura but the phrase she put her tanks on everyone else's lawns springs to mind.

Ana Mon 14-Dec-15 19:32:41

My post of 15.48 was on the subject of diversity, which is what the thread was originally supposed to be about...

bags For the record, I suggested that, in general, women are chattier than men, not that they talk more.

rosequartz Mon 14-Dec-15 21:31:39

Actually, soon didn't start the thread, and it did become quite confrontational quite quickly; I think she was trying to defend herself against something she didn't really start.
I'm sorry now about a couple of my posts - I won't delete them because they were meant to be jokey and not unkind, but if someone is feeling a bit beleaguered, back against the wall, it wouldn't have helped.

I agree with granjura

petallus Mon 14-Dec-15 22:17:10

i also agree with granjura. Witch-hunt is exactly the right word. Horribly unpleasant.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 14-Dec-15 22:22:33

Considering this thread is about diversity, it's done a pretty good job of showing what can happen when one person is a bit different.

Ana Mon 14-Dec-15 22:27:38

Have you read the thread in its entirety, Wilma? It's not simply a case of someone being a bit different.

Ana Mon 14-Dec-15 22:32:00

And it was started as a result of comments made on another thread on which accusations and insinuations were made. All a bit of a mess, really, but not fair to lay blame purely on one side.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 14-Dec-15 22:55:02

Ana I didn't realise until later about the comments on the other thread, but either way this thread makes pretty unpleasant reading and I wasn't taking sides. I did think Iam64's comment about tanks and lawn was pretty good because I have been taken aback by some of the things soon says, but it takes all sorts to make life interesting. I prefer to pick my battles where I choose and usually focus on a stance rather than one person and their opinions.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 14-Dec-15 23:05:02

Wish I didn't sound so pompous blush

Anniebach Mon 14-Dec-15 23:25:28

I really don't want to add more to this but I think all this came about not because of an opinion but a stance , it gets tiring if one decides not to answer a question to keep things calm and then gets asked over and over and over for answer

petallus Tue 15-Dec-15 08:14:52

It should be possibly to find something tiring, irritating or whatever and still not descend to the kind of behaviour which has been going on on this thread though.

Anniebach Tue 15-Dec-15 08:30:38

I agree , it was a pity one poster kicked off again

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Dec-15 09:23:55

I have read a bit more of this thread than I had when I responded in a joking manner. I am horrified.

My God! Some of you would not have got away with some of these posts if I had been on Gransnet on Sunday! Disgraceful!

Totally nasty. Why was this thread started at all? To provide entertainment? Yes. I think so. Eurgh!

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Dec-15 09:25:17

Galen is not the only one who could be thinking of sodding off from Gransnet. And it won't be because of anything soon has said!

Anniebach Tue 15-Dec-15 09:28:08

Come off it jingle, you are no different , why do some suddenly become holier then thou

Alea Tue 15-Dec-15 09:28:23

No Jingl, the thread was started in an attempt to find out whether or not we feel GN is lacking in diversity, if so, or if not, whether we feel that is important.
S2B's observation on another thread had set me thinking and whatever your cynical, unjustified, outraged opinion, it was started in good faith.

It started to go toxic at the suggestion of an overly preoccupation with "logging" personal details.
Now do you mind leaving off handbagging me please?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Dec-15 09:38:29

I would never dream of saying some of the things that have been said on this thread. ie Telling a poster she can clear of as soon as she likes, just to start off with. And "No more soon". How patronising is that?

soon has been bullied.

Anniebach Tue 15-Dec-15 09:47:48

And I wouldn't dream of posting some things you have said in posts jingle , so realy we all have our own views on what is bullying, mocking, patronising, insulting, ill mannered, kind, helpful, supportive

rosequartz Tue 15-Dec-15 09:48:57

I am sure you started the thread with good intentions alea. However it did become most peculiar for want of a more apt word, and, not having seen the thread from which the OP arose, perhaps I am not the best person to comment.

I was surprised that GN did not delete it.
