this really made me laugh

I wonder whether there will be any complaints (and possibly law-suits) after Christmas when all those who have received JL telescopes as presents find out they can't actually see the Man in the Moon with it! shock

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 12:57:45

The ad is great.

The telescope will be what it is - an inexpensive one which may help children learn about the night sky. Anyone wanting to do serious astronomy is not going to buy it and Aldi know that.
DH bought a pair of binoculars from Lidl once - they were a very good make and brilliant.

Perhaps blackdog has taken a leaf out of your book Jingl. I have yet to read a pleasant post from you today! Hope you are not feeling unwell. smile

Can you actually be an 'anti something' fan? confused

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 12:02:15

blackdog2 did you copy that post out of the Book of Posts For People Wanting To Sound Clever But Haven't Actually Got The Brain Power To Think of Anything Themselves? smile

You're right NatalieM

I think they'd be happy at the idea of a parody, it means that the JL advert is somewhat culturally significant which is what they wanted. Great advert!

This one is for Grans everywhere!(Eat your heart out John Lewis) grin

Haven't seen either ad I'm afraid, am a customer of both stores though

Greyduster Thu 26-Nov-15 10:58:44

I like the Aldi ad (surprised there wen't copyright issues though!), and if we hadn't bought a telescope for our grandson for Christmas two years ago (from JL!) I might have got him one - from what I've seen, they look pretty good for an entry level scope and you get a tripod! Aldi stuff usually comes with three year guarantees too.

grabba Thu 26-Nov-15 10:44:18

Love the advert. £7 million for John Lewis one is not mitigated by association with Age UK in my opinion. I haven't watched JL advert and don't think it's appropriate for adverts for commercial organisations to guilt trip people in to spending money by using other people's situation. Just saying

blackdog2 Thu 26-Nov-15 10:37:26

Oh dear, oh dear, aren't there some small minded anti Aldi fans on here! Oh come on dears, please get a life.

JamJar1 Thu 26-Nov-15 09:58:29

If anyone saw the recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme on Aldi, think it's still available to view, they might be worried about the chances of getting a telescope which hasn't been shattered. Staff are encouraged to throw things up and onto shelves to save time. This was just one thing amongst many more serious foodie concerns.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 09:50:13

Was it Star Wars? Can't remember now!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 09:49:54

Yes. I think so. It's just another spin-off, like the Star Wars one. They will probably be pleased.

annodomini Thu 26-Nov-15 09:48:45

I've sent the link to my JL 'contact' to see what they're saying about it. I think they'll just have a good laugh.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 09:48:02

Indinana, I'm quite capable of seeing the humour in the ad, thank you very much. hmm It made me laugh. But the John Lewis ad goes a lot deeper emotionally. And that's not always an easy thing to do.

I'm not against the ad at all.

annodomini Thu 26-Nov-15 09:44:13

Aldi and Lidl have both accepted card payments for a long time now. I can't remember when I last had to pay cash in either of them - maybe a good ten years.

Stansgran Thu 26-Nov-15 09:36:35

But can you phone up Aldi ,put it on your card and have them send it out( the telescope I mean) you can only use cash in Aldi can't you?

ninathenana Thu 26-Nov-15 09:33:56

Meant to say the add made me smile.

ninathenana Thu 26-Nov-15 09:33:03

Aldi home and ware stuff is usually very good. DH has had several power tools and hand tools from there.
Might think twice about the quality of a telescope though.

Teetime Thu 26-Nov-15 09:21:17

Brilliant - made me laugh out loud! Still wont be buying from Aldi and especially not a telescope.

Indinana Wed 25-Nov-15 23:23:46

It doesn't need to be 'a patch on the JL one' though, jings. The whole point of it is the parody, the joke. And I think they've done that pretty well.

Nelliemoser Wed 25-Nov-15 23:16:15

I doubt if JL would be worried. It's bordering on a parody come tribute. If JL started getting stroppy about copyright or such they would make themselves look very petty.
If they join in the "joke" its a win win situation.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Nov-15 22:51:24

Crap ones! grin
