Windows 10

My laptop keeps asking me to upgrade. But I haven't, mainly as I'm afraid it'll mess with the system on there now (Windows 8) which I've just got used to.

So how do you change the settings? I haven't yet installed it because, like your DH, I am suspicious also, and inclined to wait, watch and listen . However my DH, a complete techknownothing, installed it on his laptop as soon as it was offered. He has had no end of problems since.

I have Windows 8 and hate it. My computer adviser tells me to wait before installing 10 until it has sorted itself out. It will be available free for another year apparently.

I have Windows 8 on my Asus Tablet, and hated it at first, but I am slowly getting to know it a bit better. It does not seem to be intuitive as Windows 7 was, these programmers seem to think we all know what to do and where to go to look for something! DH installed Windows 8 on his computer, then had the devil of a job to de-install it. For some reason he has now re-installed it, but if he gets problems, has to call our guru son, who sorts it out.

I upgraded to Windows 10 and don't really like it. I am by no means an expert and found it over complicated for my modest needs. DSIL who knows about these things is coming tomorrow to re-install Windows 7. He upgraded on one of his two computers but is not impressed.

I am with Marmight 100%. My computer adviser also said that I should wait until all of the problems have been ironed out. I wanted to change because I also loathe Windows 8.

I am asked almost on a daily basis if I want to move to Windows 10.

I would say to anyone thinking of either installing or buying a machine with Windows 10 installed - DON'T

Far better from an operational and security perspective to stick with previous versions - preferably before Windows 8.

DW has a laptop with Windows 8 installed, and it is unnecessarily complicated, slow, and very badly organised, and as ever, Microsoft has included stuff you don't need, and not improved it's picture viewer for more than 10 years.

My own preference is for Apple Mac, or even remove the Windows software and install Unix/Linux instead.

PS: Having worked for over 30 years in IT and Telecoms I've come across (lived through might be a better choice!!) of so many incarnations of operating systems on the humble PC, Unix/Linux/Apple are the only ones that have stood the test to time.

Mr N was going to install it and I asked him why. He had a new laptop 18 months ago with Windows 8 and still can't get used to it. I have to go and sort it out and I'm still on 7. I suggested that if it ain't broke he shouldn't try to fix it. Get used to what he has as he doesn't need anything new.

He always has to have the latest 'best' tech thing and then can't use it. He has 2 versions of Hotmail on his laptop and uses the one which 'doesn't work properly'. He had to have a 'better' phone than me and still can't work it after 14 months.

He worked in IT for nearly all his working life and has no clue! Says he knows how they work and not how to work them!

I agree with all those who suggest leaving it alone. Think first what you want from a computer and if you already have it let those who like playing with such things enjoy themselves. I have no intention of upgrading until I need to replace my laptop.

Charleygirl do you have trouble with the type on W8? It self corrects on certain words but I have to constantly go back to check. If I type quiickly without looking I find I have written a complete load of rubbish and it takes forever to correct it. I have come near to chucking the tthing out of the window many times...[screech emoticon] Should have smelt a rrat when I bought the thing half price!!

Marmight I thought that I was alone and that it was something that I was or was not doing but it happens too frequently to be my fault. I bought this computer in January 2015 so I had no choice- I could not return to Windows 7 which I could manage and I am certainly not having anything to do with Windows 10 anytime soon.

I have been told by someone although my own attempt to download failed , but have been told in November Microsoft will have service pack 1 to accompany it, which may improve the download?

Marmight and Charleygirl - I have W8 on an Asus netbook and it is terrible. I have the same trouble as you with the typing, particularly on e-mail. I am a fast typist and sometimes the machine can't keep up with me so it just misses chunks out. When one of the many ads is downloading itself it won't accept typing at all until the download is finished. I'm really fed up with it and was thinking of allowing W10 but having read all the above I am not so sure now. I much preferred W7.

NotTooOld I sent an email to a friend a few minutes ago and I could not correct some of the errors but luckily she understands. I t was not total gobbledygook.

Where computers are concerned, nothing seems to get better, does it. Charleygirl? I've given the problem of not being able to type e-mails properly some thought and I'm convinced it's because there are now so many adverts on the screen. While the ads are downloading nothing else works.

I have another puzzle with e-mails. When I go to the top and insert the name of the recipient, a small window comes up asking me if I also want to send it to 'related people' and it gives me a list of names to choose from. Strangely, the names on the list do all have some connection to my intended recipient. For example, if I type in the name of my sister the list shows names of cousins that I also message from time to time. If my recipient is a member of a club I belong to, the names on the list are also members of the club. How does the computer know that? I've never, say, sent the same message to all my cousins, or to all the members of the club. It's just weird.

I upgraded to Windows 10 because I got a new laptop in the summer with Windows 8 which was so dire that anything had to be better!

Isn't it as simple as clicking on that logo that looks like a cog? Perhaps LuckyDucky will know. Lucky - what do you mean by 'every key stroke is recorded', please?
