Do you think you're still 'attractive'?

I'm not the looker I once was, but I've still got it ( I think? ) grin

GrannyAsNanny Wed 14-Oct-15 11:00:11

Aaargh! I joined gransnet because I thought it was for mature people who wanted to discuss deeper and more important issues than 'Am I still attractive'. Was I wrong? No wonder young girls are obsessed with their looks if their grandmothers are too.

I do get chatted up in Italy, but doesn't everyone? God bless those kind and randy Italians!

I did once say to DH in Sicily that a young man had clicked his tongue appreciatively as he walked past me. DH replied that he thought it was his shoes squeaking. grin

I think Gransnet is a good mixture of all subjects, light hearted and serious.

So older women don't care about their looks GrannyasNanny? really?

Elegran Wed 14-Oct-15 11:16:23

GrannyAsNanny There are plenty of threads on mature subjects. This one is chatting-over-the-teacups stuff for fun. We need both kinds, and all the ones in between.

And do you think you are still attractive? I think I am, for all my faults.

kittylester Wed 14-Oct-15 11:27:50

Who says we are obsessed with our looks - have you read any of the other threads? confused

Marmight Wed 14-Oct-15 11:34:08

I think I look fairly ok (for my age) until I see myself on Skype, which is not flattering - I look old, fat and tired. Same when I see my reflection in the mirror with reading glasses on - only there is the added horror of magnified wrinkles and open pores shock

Marmight Wed 14-Oct-15 11:41:38

Grannyasnanny There are hundreds of 'grown-up' threads in which you can participate. You just have to be more discriminating and leave us to chat about the more important frivolous concerns we have. wink It's called choice - no need to join in if you don't want to...........

LullyDully Wed 14-Oct-15 11:43:58

No to the original question. Ok in the mirror because I can put my face straight.

Awful however on a computer or camera..........ghastly.

I was hoping to look old and wise but don't seem to be achieving it.

I think I look like I did 10 years ago - until the mirror rudely tells me otherwise! Often find myself looking at other people and thinking I'm their age and then realise they're actually a good deal younger and I don't look anything near their age. Wishful thinking on my part. Still, my OH still fancies me and when he compliments me he's usually specific so I hope he's being genuine. grin

henetha Wed 14-Oct-15 14:32:39

No, I'm not still attractive. But you don't miss what you never had, do you. Face like a smacked bum, me.

hildajenniJ Wed 14-Oct-15 14:54:00

I never was very attractive. My mother used to say that I would pass in a crowd! I have a small, round face and straight, fine hair. In fact, nothing to write home about. As I've aged, I look more and more like my Granny. None of this has stopped me thinking I am beautiful. It's what's inside that counts.

aquagran Wed 14-Oct-15 15:10:01

I envy those people who look in the mirror and see their mum. I look and see my dad!
Using FaceTime is always a shock too!

Maggiemaybe Wed 14-Oct-15 15:37:48

Pass in a crowd, hildajennij! My mother used to say that. I'd forgotten. smile

Maggiemaybe Wed 14-Oct-15 15:39:43

I think she'd still have said it if I looked like Brigitte Bardot (I don't).

Falconbird Wed 14-Oct-15 15:54:12

My mum used to say I'd pass in a crowd with a push.

loopylou Wed 14-Oct-15 16:01:13

I'm with LullyDully (that's a fascinating name!) on this one grin

Never was so not missing it!

M0nica Wed 14-Oct-15 16:14:59

Attractive isn't looks it is personality and I have met many people of all ages who are without a doubt attractive, their personality radiates through and draws people to them - surely that is what attractive means.

chloe1984 Wed 14-Oct-15 17:06:11

I have always wondered throughout my life why I was never a person that attracted members of the opposite sex . Always used to wonder how I could make myself more attractive/alluring and spent many an hour debating on the unfairness of life . Some of my friends, when we were first married were always full of tales of how they had to fight men off whilst attending parties/shopping In the supermarket etc -never happened to me - never had an indecent proposal from anyone other than my DH. Won't happen now and I will never know what the secret ingredient is to being attractive to the opposite sex - do I care ? Well, only sometimes I expect the friends I had when my children were young are now having to defend their honour in the pensioners lunch club over the pudding course.

rosesarered Wed 14-Oct-15 17:14:41

Chloe1984...... A lot of people lie you know!

rosesarered Wed 14-Oct-15 17:21:32

I think I am ok, but these days nothing more, it's always a surprise when I look at photo's from the past, and think hey! I looked pretty good.I never thought so at the time.
Am not ( too ) overweight, and have no real wrinkles and only need glasses to read with, so am happy enough with that, some days look better than others it has to be said.
Sue, never ever look in a mirror where you lean over it to look down, aarrrrgh!
In the end, what does it matter at our age?

Teetime Wed 14-Oct-15 17:27:41

Me but I have had my hair cut shorter now- I think I have an interesting face but that's about it.

loopylou Wed 14-Oct-15 18:55:33

My mum used to say 'She's got it' chloe, but never explained what 'it' was!

Marmark1 Wed 14-Oct-15 19:35:31

Bee63,thank you very much.Teetime, you are very attractive.I used to be very dark like you.
Maybe like me you are content in side. The attractiveness comes from within and shines out.

I'm with GrannyasNanny on this. One of the joys of getting older (i.e. over 25 in my case) has been an increasing acceptance of who I am and a reduction in how much I care about what others think.

I will always remember the self consciousness that accompanied my teenage years, especially between 13 and 16. I felt like Alice in Wonderland, I seemed to get taller and thinner every day. Tall and skinny wasn't seen as "attractive" , I'll never forget a man shouting "look at that, a Biafran horror" as I walked down the street aged 17 and trying to be invisible.

I do care about my health, I brush my teeth, moisturise my skin, keep my hair cut as well as I can and try and avoid going up a jeans size by walking and not always eating as much as I'd like to. I no longer care what others think about how I look or dress. I don't want to put a downer or a dampener on this thread but I do feel when we have 6 and 7 year old girls in treatment for eating disorders we need to consider how much pressure we're putting on them.
