As I'm fairly new the lovely world of GN. I sometimes wonder about things before I joined. Eg what happened to granddads shed? Has it been demolished or did the GDs just want to spend time with grans' rather than be on their own?
I did ask this on the shed thread but think that it was too dusty in there for anybody to notice.
Also if I can ask another question on same post, every now and then there seems to be murmurs that things may have been a bit different when GN first started out. I do understand that things evolve as time passes. But was just wondering...

kitty and Ana grin

The current political/world situations are very interesting, so no doubt that is why there are a good few threads covering those issues. We grans are allowed to be serious some times, aren't we? I agree, though, that it is not very nice when personal or hurtful remarks are made. Let's keep it civilised!

I avoid the political threads entirely, and also shy away from anything contentious, as I`m not good at confrontation. Makes me a bit of a lightweight (I wish!!) but never mind.

Ana Fri 09-Oct-15 17:03:33

Or even Harry! grin

kittylester Fri 09-Oct-15 16:55:46

Earnest isn't the word I would use, TBH. To stay with the male names, I would say some people Hector! Did you see what I did there? I'm quite proud of that! grin

No problem with political threads Tegan, just as Elegran says, it's all about balance.

I occasionally lurk on mumsnet and they have a variety of threads to say the least.
I do start some light hearted threads as well as some heavier ones.

I do wonder sometimes, though have not sort of dared suggest it, whether some posters could nick some of their thread ideas if others of their own cannot be thought up?
I sometimes think, I wonder what gransnetters think of this issue, when I read mumsnet.

Tegan Fri 09-Oct-15 16:23:29

I don't understand the problem with the political threads; I mean, no one HAS to read anything, they're not being forced on anyone.

merlotgran Fri 09-Oct-15 15:27:15

I think those of us who enjoy light hearted threads and often make flippant remarks are getting sick and tired of being jumped on. Gransnet is not owned by anyone. We're all entitled to post in our own style so I have no problems with the earnestness on political threads. It's a bit galling though when the same single minded posters criticize posts elsewhere and end up turning what could/should be a light hearted subject into another drawn out slanging match.

Like phoenix I find fewer threads to post on these days.

Katek Fri 09-Oct-15 15:27:05

It's all in the delivery!

Katek Fri 09-Oct-15 15:26:15

I can do panto! Oh yes I can......

" Oh Daddy, you can't do that....not in your condition!"
"Condition? What condition?"
"Intestate........first of all you need to make a will leaving everything to me!"

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 15:14:29

There needs to be a balance, phoenix and recently it has tipped over into earnestness, as you say. Anyone who posts something a bit frivolous starts to feel guilty at being flippant. That is not at all good for morale.

Viva flippancy and mirth, I say. Nothing like it for cheering everyone up and givning them the strength to face the day.

Anne58 Fri 09-Oct-15 15:09:03

I must say (well, to be strictly accurate there is no actual compunction legal or otherwise to say anything) that I have been finding GN a tad "earnest" lately.

Yes, of course politics etc can be discussed, and no, I'm not saying that all threads should be fluffy/surreal/humorous, but I think the balance has shifted quite a bit.

When I check in in the morning, with my first cup of tea of the day, I sometimes fail to find a thread that I actually want to post on, which is a bit sad, really.

Only my opinion.

Galen, the parties and the panto were such fun!

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 15:04:58

Good! We know that it works. All that we need now are some more flags to plant.

They have simplified it from last time - before you had to enter co-ordinates. Now anyone with editing rights can just click on the right place. Next problem - how to accomplish that without opening the door wide to t****s who will add spam or rude words.

newist Fri 09-Oct-15 14:58:14

Yes !!! I am a some one on the right island , Sadly I have to go now, I have saved it,, I am going to the pub, I gave waited 10 years thanks smile

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:53:16

I'll send you the same link I sent Newist, Nellie. The flag lands in a fairly specific place, and the more you zoom in the closer you get, but you could put it at the nearest town, or the middle of a field some distance away - or at your local pub. I don't think you can just mark a county -but it might mark the middle of the county, I am not sure about that.

Nelliemoser Fri 09-Oct-15 14:47:50

How close to the location of our actual abode would you want us to be? Show us your map Elegran. Seriously I would not want to give more that a hint at my location than I do on the Good Morning thread.

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:47:15

I have changed a setting. Try again. Have also pmed you to say that in theory you shouild be able to edit it.

newist Fri 09-Oct-15 14:42:59

I have sent you a reply, sadly I could not open it

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:30:02

Look at your PMs, Newist

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:23:02

If enough people on this thread want to join, and we get the ground rules set, I'll start a new thread.

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:21:50

We'd better get the "rules" set out before we start. Let's decide a few things.

1) I'll find out what is needed to mark the right place, and whether it is still possible for other people to add their position (last time it got a bit complicated. It may still be the same. You may have to be added to a list of people sharing before you can add anything.)

2) Do we want to have usernames displayed, or some other text that you will recognise as you, but is not advertising your location to the wide world?

3) Do you want to mark, say, the centre of your town, or a landmark, or your actual postcode?

4) Is there anything else?

newist Fri 09-Oct-15 14:14:11

Thats a great idea Elegran I would love you to plant a flag for my location

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 14:07:51

I remember starting a Google Map where you could put a flag for where a GN member lived. It was rather labour intensive, as hardly anyone wanted to do their own flag-planting, and sent all the locations to me. That was fun for a while. If I started it up again, would there be anyone joining in? You don't have to add your exact position, somewhere vaguely near would do.

(Thinks - what am I getting myself into here?)

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 13:19:01

"There are very few light-hearted threads which are intelligent at the same time." (Quoting mcem)

Effing well start some then! Don't wait for them to come to you. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 13:17:30

Ok mcem. After that dreadul post just name some names and have done with it! grin
