I had a similar experience in New Zealand a few years ago. I lost my camera while walking near a small town. Went back to find it but nothing. Called at the police station but it was shut. Went to tourist info and left my details 'just in case'. We were just about to drive off when someone came to ask if we were the people who had lost a camera. They had seen it hanging on the police station door. Off we went to get it to be stopped by the chap next door in his garden who wouldn't let us take it unless we could tell him what was the first photo! I always take pics of my suitcase so that was easy.
Many thanks to the lovely honest people of Arrowtown.
