Yes, the cake was 'yummy' in the opinion of the noise machines (DD's boys) and what was left over they took home. This is unusual in itself as there usually some excuse made about why I should keep my home made cakes as I've 'gone to so much trouble'!

Just take your mum as you find her. Having watched my MiL go down that road, it's the best way

Was the gluten-free birthday cake well received? This should probably be on that other thread but I CBA don't have time to search for it.

You've just reminded me I have two divas overnight guests staying tonight (4&5) and two more noise machines overnight guests (5&9) tomorrow.

Had a drink or two at DD birthday dinner last night. Not planning any more in foreseeable future, but I'll feed back on that.

Anya I've been busy with the 6-year-old diva overnight guest. Just dropped her at school (mummy is having a little op today) - no time to even have a celebratory drink last night!

I might have one tonight I think with DH and DS - whilst the (other) 7-year-old diva overnight guest hopefully sleeps

I haven't kept up with this thread since I said I would have killed someone if I'd gone without my lovely wine for a month. I just wanted to pop back to give a big round of applause to those who did it and those who very nearly did it (gave up the booze, not offed the OH). Well done, all of you!

Nellie I think that we, as a generation, do drink too much. It's become a socially acceptable habit. I'm not sure when I started buying alcohol on a regular basis and it probably wasn't until the 80s or even 90s.

I'm guessing I was in my 40s.

Before that I bought quite a bit at Christmas and that was that. We never, in the early days of being married or with small children, habitually had wine with our evening meal.

Probably better for you in the long term being forced to cut right back Lona so well done. It is true that when it's something occasional you can really enjoy it - probably far more that when you were -knocking it back-- drinking regularly

I think you've all done really well, congratulations!
As someone who could drink most under the table and then had to stop because it gave me migraines, I find that I really enjoy an occasional glass of red when I go out for lunch.
One bottle, lasts me about 3/4 weeks at home, and I wouldn't want to have it more frequently now.

My post was in no way condemnatory or critical, BTW (who am I to talk? ), but I interpreted 'feeling so much better' as being purely physical - I understand now

Some nights/weekends - yes Ana But just one glass of wine was giving me a foggy brain in the morning!

I think Anya makes the point very succinctly - the link between wine= settling down, wine=reward or wine= stress reliever ... Some of us do it with wine, some of us do it with biscuits/chocolate or ......?

I recognised that even one glass of wine was becoming more of a crutch than I wanted so I challenged myself to stop and I have and I may continue because, yes it was me who said it Anya - I feel so much better

Don't think I've said I feel so much better ... have I? Not especially physically anyway, but I do feel better about myself inasmuch as I've nearly done it (2 days left) and under pretty trying conditions.

I was drinking more than I should if you count one medium glass (175 ml) of 12% red wine as 2 units of alcohol. And many of my favourite wines are 13-14%. And I didn't always stick to one glass, especially if we had company or went out.

But mainly just pleased to have broken that link between settling down for the evening and reaching for

I must say I'm wondering how much those on this thread who've given up for September were actually drinking each evening, that you feel so much better without it!

Surely more than just one glass?

I understand why DH would want to celebrate your anniversary - perhaps it's not really a delaying tactic

I'm sure you can do it alone if necessary and you will get great satisfaction - no matter how long or short your abstinence may last

To be honest, after the first week or so it does get easier and the bonus for me is that I feel so much better - I'm not sue what I will do in October. It is my birthday and we are hoping to hop over to France where sampling the local wines is essential

Hello again - not been on laptop for a few days so this is catchup. I have not done well at all - this has led to a few cross words with DH as he has been bringing wine home and as you know dry September had been his idea. Sooo we have decided to to try dry October - but listen to this DH only wants to start on 3rd Oct because it is our anniversary on 2nd!! I don't think he is going to be very committed again so I WILL start on 3rd October and do it alone - I hope.
