I knew there was a thread on mumsnet on this. I've just looked at it and it says: yes you can, but the m/c has to be a certain distance from bath/shower. The important part was: it can't have the plug point in the bathroom, it must be wired outside the bathroom.
I've never thought that m/c should be in the kitchen.

My washing machine is in the shower room off the garage (in the basement) Washing machines are never in the kitchen here. They are usually in a bathroom or utility room. If there are any regulations they are ignored as are most rules here!!

We have our washing machine in the kitchen, but it does annoy me because it's so loud. Wish I had one those silent Whirlpool washing machines!

My tumble drier is in the bathroom and I - probably against regulations - run it from a trailing socket from the landing socket. I would never use it while the shower or the bath were running.

When I lived in Germany my washing machine was in the bathroom. Now it's in the garage, due to lack of space. Like numberplease I hate going out in the winter to do the washing.

How ridiculous. From our experience, it is common practice on the continent to have the washing machine in the bathroom. I don't think we've ever stayed in a house or apartment that has it anywhere else!

My washing machine and tumble dryer are in the garage, as we have limited space in the house. Works well, but inconvenient having to go outside in bad weather to do the washing.

No Inspection , just a very conciousientous electrician ........ sigh

Building regs preclude the installation of anything these days it seems.

In DD's last house, which was a new build, she had the washing machine and tumble drier in an upstairs loo. I don't know if they'd allow that now but sometimes it depends on who is doing the inspection.

Thanks everyone ,regulations do seem to preclude the installation of the washing machine , but we are now hoping to put it in the bottom of the larder .

Regulations used to be that a washing machine must be 3 metres from the rim of a bath or shower cublicle. It might be worth checking if this still applies.

My downstairs toilet houses a washing machine, tumble drier, shower cubicle and floor mounted central heating boiler. There is also plenty of room for a towel rail and shoe rack. It is next door to a downstairs bedroom and it made sense to install a shower in there as the bathroom upstairs is through a bedroom. We have had no problems with any of them and it works very well.

Does this mean you will no longer be using upstairs? In NL they usually have the washing machine somewhere upstairs which seems to me to make a lot more sense than having a washing basket in your bedroom, carrying it all downstairs to wash and then carrying back up to put away.

I think the electrician has vetoed in the shower room because of the damp getting into the electricity. No sockets in bathrooms apart from shaver ones.

It would need to be a very big bathroom to comply with regulations and is not really recommended.Try googling for up to date info.

Not me personally, but I know a few people whose washing machine is in a downstairs shower room, one done quite recently too. I have no idea why your electrician is against it.
You could always have a shower fitted in your downstairs "utility room"wink

Does anyone have a washing machine situated in a shower room or bathroom ? We are making the Kitchen into a downstairs bedroom and shower room . Where the new smaller kitchen will be , I will have space for only a dishwasher or a washing machine , and Electrician has vetoed having a washing machine in the spacious shower room sad
