If it's a problem in France, and Cameron wants to work with France to try and solve it, why is he annoying everyone in the EU by trying to change the rights of EU migrants?

Apparently, there are 19.5 million people in N.Africa (where a lot of these immigrants are coming from) How many of these would the 'do-gooders' like to see settle in Europe? I didn't vote Tory, but thank God Cameron has refused to take the EU's proposed quota. Enough is enough!

I think that the general public in this country, on the whole, dont mind sharing services.
But it becomes different if they themselves then cant get school places, jobs, health services etc.

Threatening residents is so frightening and not the sort of thing poor refugees would do. They sound like a bunch of chancers. If only they could be sifted out from the refugees and just sent back. Its also an open goal for ISIS

I wish we could just say no, for the next 5 years. Assess the situation then, we cannot with the best intentions keep the world and his wife. It's the lorry drivers I feel sorry for. Must be a nightmare driving through all those desperate people knowing they are trying to get on your lorry and risking their lives to do it. And if they do manage to hide somewhere you will get a huge fine if they are found. Surely the Eu could set up some sort of a system to process them where they are and then send them off to countries on a quota system, returning any who don't qualify for refugee status to their country of origin.

Just heard some Calais residents on the radio. One said its the UKs fault as we give benefits to all! My SIL is from SA. He's an economic migrant I suppose. He had to jump through so many hoops and pay a fortune in govt fees to eventually be allowed to stay. It took years. He met DD after that -marrying a UK resident didn't help btw. He's done well, set up businesses and created lots of jobs. However he most certainly couldn't just walk in here and hope for the best. Why should these other Africans? (genuine asylum seekers not included in this)

I think that this situation will result in a No as regards the EU referendum. People will not want their services stretched to beyond breaking point. David Cameron may even pull out of holding the referendum.

Now they are carrying tools and knives to gain access, how long before someone gets seriously injured ? The police are unable to help every lorry driver it must be very frightening for them and make them wonder whether the job is worth it.

Mental health services are already struggling too.

The problem is there are genuine asylum seekers and the ones waiting in Calais to come here who are not.

harrigran that's the answer isn't it make the UK unattractive, at the moment we are a soft touch. What happens to them when they are caught in Dover I would like to know, in my opinion they should be sent straight back to France. Probably as you say they are housed, clothed and fed, no wonder they keep on coming. We need tougher controls at Calais, thermal imaging cameras and every lorry and car checked to prevent them getting here in the first place.

The countries they have passed through magpie are not as attractive as the UK . We house, clothe, feed, educate and cure all ills, what is not to like ?
If you go to school websites they list the criteria for getting a place at a local school, my GC were lucky to get into their village school.

Oh - I can see where Magpie is coming from. Maybe most of them are economic migrants, and surely, being young and fit, they should stay and make something of their own countries. But then, there's the violence over there.

mag your reply doesn't answer the question Of what to do in the future as this is not going to stop. We can of course as you are suggesting in your post pull up the drawbridge and turn your back, or recognise that we are part of the world community and as such energetically attempt to deal with the problem world wide. We lack good leadership in this country.

They have passed through many safe countries to get to Calais, why don't they make a new life for themselves in one of these safe places. They are economic migrants and I for one don't want them here. I have 4 nephews and nieces who are in their 20's and they can't find full time work. My granddaughter couldn't get into her first place school and I'm fed up with trying to get a doctors appointment. Nearly all of the people I talk to don't want them here either.

What ever the reason for wanting to leave your country, to do so under the circumstances that they are all enduring it is be a reasonable assumption that life in their own country must be ghastly.
Who in this country (apart from those people rushing off to be slaughtered in the Middle East) would be prepared to leave the UK and live as they do and face the dangers they face.? If however you were suddenly faced with starvation, lack of reasonable education, grinding poverty or chemical warfare, death by shrapnel or bullets or bombs without proper care for the injured or dying . Then it seems a totally rational thing to try to make a better life elsewhere. This will never stop, and given the pressures building up will get worse.
To build walls, or refuse to do anything is ridiculous . But the more sensible thing to is to get the world together and talk a way out of the problem - we do when it suits us over the economy and climate change.

Harrigran, my grandson is Danish. They have military service there. Fortunately as he has ASD he will probably not be called up. It must be unusual to be relieved that your grandson has ASD.

Families there, not just fit young army fodder.
