Post Codes a waste of time ?

We have regularly had letters for a house with our number in a similarly named road around the corner. With the correct postcode, which is not like ours at all. I have often wondered what they do in the sorting office, because they don't seem to be sorting by postcode, but by address, so why do we bother?

In my road there are no house numbers just house names, we are lucky in that the postman knows the names of everyone and the only time something is delivered to the wrong house is if it is being delivered by Hermes!!

Mine causes problems as I have two postcodes. The old one is on some 'find my address' internet systems and all utilities/council tax. The new one is the officially recognised one used by the post office and many delivery companies because it matches newer houses built along the lane and was allocated to the rest of the neighbours 20 years ago. I just wish they'd all stick to the same one - I get questions when my bank card address doesn't match the almost identical delivery address. When I moved in here I got two water bills and was accused of living in a house divided into two flats.

If it was Roberts Road and Roberts Avenue it would make more sense but it's as far removed as Acacia Avenue and Seaside Lane

I really like postcodes. I have special warm feelings for them. I like the Canadian cousins of British postcodes too.
