Car salesman lost a sale last year when he pulled the 'don't worry your little head' routine when I asked about the NCAP rating of a car I was on the point of buying. It was obvious he just didn't know, and I would have thought more of him if he'd just admitted it. I went to small, local garage and was treated like a person. He got my business.

If a car sales man treated us like that we would have walked out double quick. It smack of the wide boy car sales man. A clever sales man would have sold it to the wife, the husband is then on a hiding to nothing. I am not allowed to buy a black or silver car.

I think it was totally unecessary and it would have annoyed me. But I am feeling grumpy this week.
The last time a changed my car I tried out a couple of different models. I was buying for me, but the salesman kept talking to my OH.

He did the sort of sales pitch worthy of a double glazing salesmen then said I think "we" (him and OH) have built up a relationship.

OH doesn't get the idea of standing back and being rather aloof when being given a sales pitch so he seems to get drawn in. Sales pitches and forced chumminess really annoys me and puts me off completely.

If he was talking to a man he would probably have suggested spending the savings on some flowers for his girlfriend/wife.

Now I am being patronising smile

I've never really understood why it is so bad when someone is patronising. Mildly annoying if they're being superior or condescending, but for the most part I barely register if someone is patronising towards me.

I agree janea! Pleasant change!

A bit cheeky perhaps but I wouldn't have taken offence at all.
And definitely could have been said to a man I'd have thought.

I bought a newer car recently without any hint of sexism involved-well done Hyundai garage grin

I agree, janea. I certainly wouldn't be taking my business elsewhere just because of that. They probably have a slightly different line they use for men, along the lines of gadgetry and/or power tools! grin

One could say that to a man though, perfectly easily, so I don't think it patronising.

Thank goodness this isn't a thread about Gransnetters making patronising comments to or about each other grin

No Pauline I don't think it was patronising. Possibly slightly impertinent, but it wouldn't have ruffled my feathers, really.

Not quiet the same but last time I changed my car I let the salesman direct his entire conversation at DH then when he asked for DH's details I said "I think you'd better take mine, he doesn't drive"
I do believe he actually blushed grin

I just tried to upgrade my mobile phone contract with Three UK. The conversation went something like " there is no upfront cost for the mobile phone so you will be able to spend the money on something nice for yourself or for your home"
Now, am I being uber-sensitive? I bet they wouldn't have said that to a man!
Needless to say, I am looking elsewhere.
Anyone else had anything similar said to them?
