pompa please be careful that you do not frighten the scarecrow. Also it is one thing scaring the pidgeons it is another seeing them having a cardiac arrest.

I can see a scarecrow from the bottom of my garden. It's so tempting to dress it up to give its owner a surprise. I don't want to give him a heart attack though, so maybe a mankini wouldn't be the best choice! I do however love the idea of all the pigeons having heart attacks - they have given me enough of them when they have eaten all my rocket and spinach!

I would hate to be the cause of a pigeon having cardiac arrest. They strut around my garden en-masse, eat all my newly emerged seedlings, crap on my garden furniture (and on me if I'm sitting there), wake me up early, eat the food I put out for the smaller birds, ete etc. Such a welcome addition to the garden, and even more welcome in,my freezer.

I'm a veggie but I have eaten pigeon in the past and it was quite tasty if mostly bones. I've also eaten snails which were OKish.

I worked with foreign students for awhile and one day a student from a very poor part of the world pointed to the pigeons on the roof tops and asked if we ate them.

It came home to me that there's free food in this country just walking about on the pavements or wandering about in our gardens not to mention all the seagulls - I don't think they would taste too good.

I think that small birds have left my area of London. I cannot remember when I last saw a sparrow or robin. I do see crows fighting occasionally but little else.

Small birds only like gardens they can hop to in short bursts, they need loads of shrubs and sadly people have ripped them all out in favour of decking. They need protection from the crows, which attack them.

We just eat the pigeon breasts, when DBH shoots them in the winter, usually because they have been attacking my kale and other brassicas. I put them in pies, or quickly fry them. No fat so very good for you.

I understand that seagull meet is pretty disgusting, tastes very fishy Falconbird according to a programme I watched some time ago about (I think ) St. Kilda Islanders, who used to catch them and gannets for food makes me gag remembering the programme because they sort of ate them 'high'.....

Here I am and I can see that there is so much news about which I know nuffink. Please bear with me for a wee while. I shall be backn to normal-ish by tomorrow.

We've had a lovely time with MacS's sister and brother in law. The weather could not have been more accommodating. We took them to the Mull of Kintyre and we were the only people walking along a superb stretch of beach. Had lunch in Campbeltown and then continued around the peninsular to Skipness. Visited the castle. Came home for roast lamb and Champagne...of which I had one glass (as I was to taxi our guests back to their guest house at the end of the evening.) When I did return, I was helping MacS to tidy away and I picked up what I thought was an empty bottle of red wine. I went to the sofa to pick up a cushion and tipped the bottle as I did so. It was not empty. I have as good as ruined the off white linen sofa. You have never seen such a MESS! My pal is coming round shortly to see if she can be of assistance. At first I was angry with myself. MacS then suggested that a damaged sofa was of no real consequence when compared with the plight of our dear neighbours. Of course, he is so right.

Sister and brother-in-law will now continue their whistle-stop tour of GB. They are returning to Northamptonshire. after which, they travel to catch up with friends in Spain. It has been a very happy, chatty few days.

Welcome home dear pompa. Tonight we shall put our feet up and enjoy unwinding after a very hectic albeit enjoyable reunion with MacS's sister and brother-in-law.

Dear MacS, I'm pretty sure my DH wouldn't have been so philosophical and I'd have been very upset but MacS is absolutely right.

I've successfully added our * Bella* to the booking for next year on the 'slumming' cruise on royal Princess in June. I'm looking forward to that more than my Cunard ones! It will be so nice to see her again.
