Acccording to his autobiography he is . He's definately the one who loves performing and writing etc. But I'm thinking more in terms of his relationship with the girl that Brian Jones treated badly [Anita Palenberg?]combined with the respectful way he talks about his other relationships...plus his long and happy marriage to his second wife [he's a real family man]. As with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; their brick/anchor seems to be Benmont Tench [who???]the organist.

Oh I see, I'm afraid I was thinking more of the drugs rather than his relationships - sorry!

NotToOld yes that report from Hunter Davies was true I am led to believe,Cynthia came home with Julian to find JL and YO in their home with Yoko wearing Cynthia's dressing gown,what a horrible man to have done this kind of thing to his wife,I was a massive Beatles fan and used to go every lunchtime when I could to Cavern but there where quite a few who didn't take to JL he always thought he had delusions of grandure and couldn't wait to leave Liverpool for good.
Rest in peace Cyn.Such a lady.

I read Cynthia's book as I said above and I know it is only one side of the story but she said he offered to treat her to a short holiday and persuaded her to go and when she came back he had Yoko firmly ensconced in their house. She said that when she arrived at the house they were both sitting there together and they just ignored her. Obviously John's version would probably have been different. I got the impression from the book that she wasn't full of self pity, she was just telling her version of events. The cheek of Yoko paying tribute to her on social media after her death.

I believe Yoko Ono bought John's family home in Liverpool when it came up for sale. I think it might now be National Trust property. Perhaps she gave it to the NT.

Tegan - I agree with you about Macca's more recent music and I couldn't believe it when he played Hey Jude at the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Why?

Incidentally, what is 'marmite'? (Am I dim or what?)

not Marmite is the expression people use as shorthand for you either love it if hate it - in other words have strong feelings about, no middle way.

glamma how interesting that you went to the cavern when it was all happening. I watched the story of Cilla Black and some of it was set when she started out at the cavern.

As an aside, I happened to be on a TV programme recently (or I think it was on the news) when Paul McCartney's childhood home was up for auction ... it didn't sell for a vast amount. Not that much interest I suppose.

Both John's and Paul's childhood homes are owned by the National Trust. DH and I went on a tour of them a couple of years ago. It was wonderful

Not my favourite NotTooOld It was Juliet, The Four Pennies , that was playing.
It reminded me of dancing to it and the boy I was dancing with. I could almost have been there.

Unfortunately really, John Lennon was my favourite Beatle - shame he was such a bounder.

My favourite Beatles Song is "Let it Be." Paul wrote it about his mother and it always brings tears to my eyes. I think Paul was the superior song writer and the heart of the group.

I love Hey Jude and so many others. As I loved George, I love that clip from A Hard Days Night where he sang Happy Just to Dance With You. Sometimes in a bored moment I play it on youtube and go back 50 or so years. I can still see what I saw in him - that broad accent, crooked teeth, floppy hair - oh sorry did I type that out loud

It is interesting how the Beetles are in so many people's lives and memories. Even those who were too young to listen the first time round.

John Lennon seems to be another example of someone artistic and gifted, but who had difficulty coping with relationships. x
