My aunt once had one of her little nephews to stay for a few days. Everything was fine until she tried to wash his hair. He told her that she mustn't wash it because his head would bleed. She was certain that his mother would have mentioned this but at the same time didn't want to have to cope with a bleeding head! When his mother collected him she confirmed that it was complete fantasy on his part 
Coolgran if DGS told DD I'd smacked him (I never would) her response would probably be "Well what did you do to deserve it ?" Thereby putting him on the spot
He's nearly 6 and unfortunately has been caught out on lies a couple of times. As others have said, what are they thinking.
My dgd is aged 7 and is a most adorable child, biddable most of the time.
Since she was 6 months we have looked after her at least one day a week, (and now also her 4 year old brother), family Sunday dinners and occasional random times. When she was around 3 or 4 she told her mother (my dil) that I had smacked her.... total rubbish. Her mum mentioned it to me, knowing quite well that I wouldn't have smacked her. And indeed if she had been given a tap on the legs that she would have deserved it.... but it didn't happen and never has happened.
At that time, and now, dgd loved to come to us, always had a great time, her claim of me smacking her was not mentioned further.
Mum and dad had spoken with dgd who insisted I had smacked her, although they knew she was telling a lie, dgd 'would not break' 
About a month later on one of her days with us, upon arrival her mum said..... you have something to say to granny.
Dgd came to me and said..... "" Granny, I'm sorry I told a lie, you did not smack me and I'm very sorry""
We never got to the bottom of why ?? I think she said it (for whatever reason) and then couldn't go back on it. And why she then decided to admit that it was a lie..... who knows.
Her mum and dad totally knew it was a lie, but had her parents been different types of people.... it could have caused trouble.
As it is, her parents totally trust us with regards to discipline of her and her 4 year old brother, and have never questioned it.
I remember asking DGS "Have you asked Mummy?" Once when he asked me something (probably TV) when he was about 2+ , and he replied confidently "Yes". What he didn't add was that Mummy had said a firm "No!" But he had answered my question "truthfully". Moral, rephrase the question!

Yes, pushing the boundaries is quite healthy and normal. When faced with this sort of dilemma I say 'I'll just give Mummy/Daddy/your teacher a quick phone call to see if that's OK. Then I fish out my mobile.

I'm still puzzled by it. For all his faults, telling lies for the sake of it isn't one of DGSs, but I got the distinct feeling that his little sister thought about her answer before continuing the, er, lets call it a 'misunderstanding'. If she did, then heaven help us all as she gets older
Oh dear, maybe she takes after me. At three years old, I was once playing out with my six-year-old brother and we got our best clothes covered in melted tar from the road. My elder brother went home and tried to hide (our mum says she just had to follow the tarmac footprints to find him), but I went to our next-door neighbour and told her that my mum had sent me round to see if she could get the tar off my clothes!!!
Never underestimate a two year old, my GC used to try and hoodwink me all the time. Have you ever tried escaping from cot/bed in one of those sleeping bags ?
My eldest GD told me the last time she stayed that she was going to watch Harry Potter as she had overheard Mummy telling Daddy that she was old enough to watch these films now 
Although I mind the GDC on a regular basis, last night was the first time for ages that I've done evening babysitting at their house that involved getting DGS and DGG to bed.
Having helped DGS (3.6 yrs) put on his pyjamas then snuggle up under his duvet, I said, "I suppose T still has a sleeping bag, doesn't she?". To my surprise, he told me that she doesn't have a sleeping bag any more, now that she (2.2 yrs) is a big girl. I was a little dubious, but didn't say any more.
I then took DGD (also in her pyjamas by now) through to her room. I spotted a sleeping bag over a chair in the corner, so I thought I'd try the innocent approach of saying, "oh, there's your sleeping bag. We need to put you in that, don't we?". DGD looked at me with a slightly puzzled expression, then mouthed "no" and shook her head.
Don't ask me why, but at that moment I believed her. I'd no reason not to, based on previous experience. So, I tucked her up under the three blankets that were on the cot side (one or two of which are usually used for afternoon naps).
It was only 10 minutes later, when I got settled downstairs, that I realized that I'd almost certainly been stitched up. Why would the sleeping bag even have been there if it was no longer used? However, the last thing I wanted to do now was disturb a quiet and probably already sleeping toddler by trying to get her into the bag, so I left things as they were.
Sure enough, when the parents got home they confirmed that she still has a sleeping bag. Given that the DGC have never tried to deliberately mislead any of us, we were all quite surprised and have no idea what must have been in their minds, but I have to admit that we were all rather amused by it too.
I tell you what though - I won't be that gullible again
