Dave Clark Five

I didn't see this programme but this thread has brought back a forgotten memory of going to see my Aunty, Uncle and two cousins of close to our age. They were better off than us and had a record player and records. I remember repeatedly dancing to (stamp, stamp!)'Glad all Over' and also 'Bits and Pieces' which for some reason we sang as 'Bits anata Pieces'. To this day I have no idea what Dave Clark or his Five looked like.

I don't think it's the original Dave Clark Five Glad all Over that's trying to be number one at Christmas - from what I've found out from googling it's sung by some football club or other...

Well I'm glad all over if this is a return to the popular music standards of the 60s - much better than the current offerings.
Whether it's the Dave Clark 5, Beatles, Hollies, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones or whatever. They're full of life!

The original Glad all over single by DC5 could be 2016 christmas number one.

The first record I ever bought was Bits and Pieces. Always liked Dave Clark, nice hair and a lovely smile. Music wasn't bad either. Thought Mike Smith looked a bit too "grown up".

What could be number one at Christmas?

I thought they were OK. I liked Mike Smith and would sing along with Glad All Over etc but found them a bit boring. I was a Beatles gal. Was this programme a repeat? All the interviews look very old but when I looked it up on Wiki it said 2014.

The press did the same thing to Judy Finnigan , published images taken to show the worst. If they were younger they would have been airbrushed to take out the imperfections, one rule for the young another for us oldies.

Dave Clark seems to have used the same cosmetic surgeon as Gary Glitter! Look at the eyebrows!

Yes we saw them before they were famous. We didnt want them to get famous because we knew then they would leave Liverpool and we would lose them. There were crowds of us outside the Cavern the day they got rid of Pete Best. They just took off just after that. Always felt so sorry for Pete- he was beautiful and the girls loved him. Could anyone be as unlucky as him- to be dumped on the threshold of fame and fortune?

Mrsmopp - you were so lucky to be a Liverpool girl and able to go to the Cavern at lunchtimes. Did you see The Beatles????

Whilst we followed them because of the local involment, for me it was (and still is) the Stones. It appears that DC5 were bigger in the USA, even bigger than the Beatles.

Much preferred the Beatles, being a Liverpool girl. We were so proud of them. Adored the Hollies too. Ahhh those were the days my friend.
We could go to the Cavern at lunchtime for 1/- to watch the groups practising & were often late getting back to work.

I must try and get this on Catch-up. I did like Dave Clark 5's Glad All Over and Bits and Pieces and thought he was quite handsome ( I think this was about 1964)? Not a patch on the Stones, Beatles etc though, of course.

I don't actually think they were ever in the same league as the Beatles, Stones and Kinks. I saw the programme and only recognised a few of their so called Big Hits. Maybe they were more popular in America than here, but I got a distinct whiff of hype - no surprise as that was Dave Clark's outstanding talent. He certainly wasn't the world's best drummer!!

I frequented the Royal from 1962 > 1968.

I've posted before, that I think pompa and I were at the Royal, Tottenham, at the same time. I never saw the DC5 there, though, and I was never a big fan of their music.My friend and I both fancied Mike Smith, and he lived quite near us. A school friend who's surname was Smith often got calls from screaming fans as her address was very near his.

I watched the programme on TV replay and enjoyed the first part but then it began to get boring and I remembered why I wasn't really a Dave Clarke 5 fan.

They were great but not as interesting as The Beatles or The Stones or The Kinks whose music was much more varied.

I watched it until I got so bored with all the gushy hype. I too only remember Bits and Pieces and Glad All Over. I didn't ever perceive them as on a par with The Beatles or The Stones. They were just too bland and predictable. In my opinion!

Would someone remind me what Twiggy did that justifies her offering us her insights into the bl**ding obvious all the time? i know she was thin and did some modelling - but anything significant?

Watched it today [although did nod off part way through as had a very early start this morning with not much sleep]. Fascinating man; way ahead of his time. Hadn't realised they'd had so many hit records [or made so many albums]. However, their music was, I feel catchy but soulless..from the mind, not from the heart.

Looking forward to watching the prog on replay.

pompa Yes, if they come from your area, you know more about them. I lived in Manchester and used to see all the famous bands and know a few of them.

Tegan, it was on BBC2 0n Saturday 14th.

Lona, we (mainly DW) loved them, but I guess part of that was knowing them in our circle of friends, as I said DW's best friend worked with Mike and another of her friends went out with Dennis. We followed them around before they got famous. But, we did not realise just how respected they were in the industry or just how well they managed themselves.

Those days at the Royal were fantastic, 10/- got you in, plus a couple of beers, and with luck you would pull . Used to go Tuesdays, ballroom (hands on) and Fridays (main bands, but cheaper than Saturday)
