I forced myself to watch him on Andrew Marr this morning and heard him say that people on benefits should look after themselves and get treatment for their smoking and obesity "Like those in work do" Well I'm sorry but I meet lots of people in work who don't look after themselves at all. Working doesn't suddenly make you health concious.

But then we live in a land of greed these days so goodness knows what will happen. And just thinking of oneself, not anyone else.

I'd rather have the 70's when we all looked out for each other, it instilled some morals and principals in us maybe?

The whole point of social housing is to have housing available for when people are at most in need of it so this idea smacks in the face of that. How are people supposed to turn to the council in their time of need and get some form of roof over their heads if all the social housing has been given away. It just does not make sense. And I live in social housing. I wouldn't accept this as I have just given up a large three bed for my two bed so that a full family can now move in and have the opportunity to enjoy more space when they were probably in b and b or cramped conditions elsewhere. And when I am not filling the two beds here, I will downsize again to a one bed and free up this house for another family as both these houses have been available when I needed them so it is only fair to move on and free them up for others.

So far I have only seen this reported in The Times so hopefully it was thrown into the air to see the reaction and has now died a death. I think I may ask my MP if and when he ever turns up in his constituency.........boy would I love him to lose his seat, not because of his party but because he is never here other than for fundraising dinners and such which are reported in the local paper.

Just another way of moving property owned by the state for the benefit of those that need it back into private hands. One-third of ex-council properties are now owned by private landlords - many of them very rich. The son of a Conservative housing minister at the time of Mrs Thatcher, apparently owns at least 40 ex council properties. A nice little earner for some.

The Conservatives have done enough damage already with their housing "initiatives" - this is surely a step too far?

Has IDS announced whether he is going to retire or not?

....and it is absolutely unjust. The market value of a council house (yes, I know they are not all council owned) can vary from £40,000 or even less in some areas of England to £1 million or more for someone in a council house in central London. For some, get into work, work for a year, get ownership of your home, wait 3 years, sell it for £1 million and never work again.

On the other side think of all those ex-council property tenants who bought their property and have worked and saved for years to pay their mortgage, finally do and then see their neighbour GIVEN their home.

He's hoping it will save a lot of housing benefit, crun. He gives them the house instead of housing benefit providing they've got a low paid job.
What he forgets is that most people on housing benefit are in work anyway.

I'm sure this must have saved 0.0000000000001% of the public budget.

It has been said that this idea has to be bad as even Osborne thinks it is suspect.......he is not know for his bleeding heart. Here lies madness.
