Hull Accent

I have only been to Hull once (apart from getting on and off ferries to and from Rotterdam). We went to The Deep and then had a walk round the town. We thought it was a lovely town and we loved the Maritime Museum - I love maritime art and models of ships - could have stayed all day! They were redeveloping the area around The Deep and I would like to see what it looks like now, so perhaps another visit is overdue.

When we lived in Hampshire I was asked by one girl to teach her friend to talk properly as she could not understand what her friend was saying; one from town and one from country Hampshire. I was from Hull.
I have never pronounced it 'ull. I would have been told off by my mother.

I love to listen to different accents and guessing where they are from,well done Hull on City of Culture in 2017,I have only been there twice and found it a very friendly place I would make the effort to go again as we where made very welcome indeed.

You would be pleasantly surprised if you did visit

A lot of people come to Hull Uni and never leave the city because they discover it's not the horrible place they thought it would be.

I spent 3 happy years as a student in Hull.

It would be a dull place if we all sounded alike.

I don't now about Arthur Nerm but I remember Arfur Sixpence.

Thinking about it, wouldn't it be pronounced 'Arthur Nerm' in Hull?

I always think the Hull accent sounds a bit Scandinavian. And why wouldn't it.

Dialects, pronunciation and use of words are fascinating!

I well remember a very Devonian colleague coming out with the sentence;

"But where's Missus too? Her should be here so us can tell she about it!"

A tad like the comment by Eric Morcambe to Mr Preview, re all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

I was thinking on the lines of "House and Home" ?

Hearth and Home? Household goods? (I'm not from Hull, BTW, but that's how many here 'up north' would pronounce it! )
