No, best not. I would warn him that you are going to forget - because you will. It's like your husband stopping having sugar in their tea after 30 years, how can you remember at first? It took me five years to remember my sister's change of name after she remarried. Just tell him that it will be hard to have to relearn a new name, and ask him to forgive you if you forget.

Ah. I think my generation is perhaps a little more used to children coming out than yours, my daughter and son both had friends who were able to be open about what they thought they really were and how they felt. One of DS's best friends had to be named and shamed in the school magazine in the end because he wore more jewellery than any girl in the school, and had hairstyles that were far more flamboyant. I think we all came to accept at about the same time that there were four main sexes, not two. I have SO many friends who have been to gay weddings lately. I feel quite left out.

I can't imagine what I'd do in this circumstance, except perhaps tell your child that you will support them, no matter what.

My first thought was, it wouldn't worry me particularly. My second was - how it would fall to me to have to explain it to the older generation, and they would perhaps see it a little differently. Explaining it to them would be my only worry.

My next worry would be, will they change their name, and will I forget to use it?

But you are you, and I am me, and maybe the same things don't worry us both. I can see it would be unsettling, I would probably worry for a child in case they were picked on by others. Any difference from the 'norm' makes life harder than it already is.

My son/ daughter has decided to to officicially change his/hers gender to female.

Well I have come in to hide as I seem to have upset some people by sharing a PM I received which was clearly not meant for me! As it was "private" I have not shared the writer's name to spare her blushes as it contained an unflattering description of an unnamed forum member!

So I had better lie low for a bit until they calm down!
On a much more positive note, DD who lost her baby in the Autumn and her lovely talented sculptor partner have announced their engagement from their holiday in the Brecon Beacons he is to be Pippa's godfather too - the Christening is next Sunday- so really one of the family.

I considered going to Oxford Street but if I got down on the pavement to beg I would never get up again! Tara would be useless, she likes her comfort.

I do on line banking and because I have obviously not been around on line, my account has been cancelled so I am having to start again, waiting a week for an activation code. Nothing is simple in this life any more.

The lens fell out of my glasses and I need them all of the time, especially for driving. I found myself driving to the optician, 5 miles away, a lomng journey in London with heavy traffic, with one eye closed. He did not charge me but he did siggest that I buy a spare pair- it will not be in the forseeable future.

soop I do hope that you can get an early appointment tomorrow. There is nothing worse than toothache.

I've included the latest Pomeranian painting in the album. As you'll see, it's still taped to the board alongside the photo from which I worked.

So, thank you ALL for your company. I shall prepare to settle down before the fireside and enjoy reading the Sunday paper. At six o'clock sharp...I shall take my first sip of Malt and cringe as it hits the exposed nerve. After which, I shall calm down and wish you all a very pleasant and peaceful evening. jane It wasn't that I was fed up with the portrait but, having reached the point at which I needed to stop...or start making a mess of things, I made the decision to wrap and take it to the post office. As it happens, I had missed the Saturday collection (9.15 am) so it is still awaiting collection for first thing tomorrow morning. Never mind. All I ask is, that when it arrives, it won't be a disappointment.

I'm about to photograph the Pomeranian painting. If it comes out well, I shall add it to the album. In reality it looks very much like the dog, however, a flash can distort the colours somewhat.

Hello all, I have returned from the land of the dead, or so it would appear. I have been without internet access for nearly 3 weeks and I realise that I have a major addiction! The plus point is that I discovered a little known word (to me) called filing so made inroads there. I did not get around to sorting out my 2 wardrobes which was a pity.

My stairlift died and I needed a new "pack" ie motor, brakes the lot. The engineer thought £1000 but advised me to ring the office which I did. They said no charge so I thanked the lady and hurriedly replaced the phone.

My trusty ancient washing machine decided to have a permanent break so I now have a shiny new one.

My router gave up the ghost and as my elderly computer was on its last legs I decied to buy a new one. Plusnet took over a week to send the new router and my "computer man" was working miles away so nothing was done until yesterday. I had 600 emails to tackle and I have almost finished that lot.

I only need a plumber, electrician and a roofer now so I am working through the list.

Tara decided she could not be left out so I had to take her to the vet over 2 weeks ago after she re-designed my duvet cover with blood. The bully boys had made sure that she has hardly been outdoors for 2 years, therefore could not adequately care for her claws so at least 3 claws had curled and were digging into her pads. Antibiotics, painkillers and a hefty bill, she is now back to normal, acting the diva.

Life is hopefully back to normal again.

soop I meant to say - how remiss of you not to take a photo of your completed painting. Maybe by then you were fed up with the sight of it?

It's so beautiful today - and a whole 9C! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next week, when DBH has a week off, as I need raised veg beds built. He won't put his nose outside unless it's warmish. We also need warm weather for squirting foam up inside all of our curved roof tiles, to stop the meece getting in. They are costing me a fortune in nice blue grain.

Sometimes it just needs a "patch". I had a similar mega sensitivity problem with a crown 2years ago and got through quantities of clove oil (it was of course the weekend) as, since I had driving to do I couldn't resort to my usual paracetamol washed down with brandy. The emergency dentist on Monday morning stuck " something" onto the tooth/crown and touch wood have had no trouble since!

jane I already use Sensodyne. I shall be calling the dentist first thing in the morning. If she threatens to use the air-puffer thingy I shall have to beg her not to. Touching the area with my warm or cool tongue sends a jagging pain across my upper gum. Yikes!!!

My very dear soop - you misunderstood me. If you want to use malt whisky as an anaesthetic - drink it!

The last pain I had was when I had split a tooth in two, and went through three dentists and their xrays to no avail. The fissure was so slight and was hidden from the xray angles. I did get through a lot of clove oil and nurofen and sleeping tablets until four months later, half of the tooth (on the way home from the third xray!) suddenly popped out!

HUGE apologies from the dentist, I had been the last patient and he was on his own clearing up when I called from home in great distress. He told me to turn around and go straight back, and extracted the other half.

Those previous four months had been very wearing, toothache is very tiring, it's hard to sleep.

I wonder if a few days of using toothpaste for sensitive teeth would help? They are very good now.

Ouch, you poor poor thing. Do be careful with cloves, they are strong and can actually irritate the gum- so could be making it worse. It will only help if it can reach the exposed nerves. When I mixed some for my sil, with a pestle and mortar and a little oil- it worked well.

Hope you can get to a dentist tomorrow and get an emergency appointment. So debilitating.

It snowed a bit more this morning, but sunny now. Lunch and the I'll be out shovelling more snow which has drifted all over the drive and in front of garage.

Toothache is miserable- I don't like whisky so isn't an option!

Like annsixty I also hope that Pippa's christening is a joyful occasion for every member of your family. As for getting into something attractive for the occasion...a beautiful coloured pashmina worn with most outfits, always seems to work well and, what's more, if I've a few extra pounds to hide, I drape it befittingly... Scotland v France.

granjura I've been chewing cloves. I did try to extract the oil from them but to no avail. I may do as jane suggests and boil a few so that they make a pulp.

I'm having to drink through a straw. It may in fact be that the gum has receded too far and exposed the soft cement-type tissue. Whateva! It bloody well hurts. Also, because I took some strong painkillers (together with my usual medication) before going to bed, I had what seemed like non-stop scary dreams. One dream was that odd (peculiar) that I am too embarrassed to share with you lot...
