How do we escape?

DH and I have ended up spending Christmas with a couple we met in a hotel last year. We'd planned to meet again at the same hotel, but the rates were extortionately high. However, the couple asked us to stay with them for Xmas instead. I don't really like staying with other people, but because we were obviously free at the time, we couldn't think of an excuse not to join them, quickly enough. We came yesterday - and it's quite dire! The house is stiflingly hot. Not a lot of conversation, other than the 5 years they lived in China and how kind they were to the poor people there. The chap doesn't like this person or that person....does like shooting grouse/pheasant, squirrels etc (we hate blood sports of Amy kind) and we've discovered he's very opinionated, while his wife nods off a lot (no wonder). Before we came we'd been persuaded to stay for 3 days. I need an escape route - please help!!

Just pack up and go. Don't waste any more good holiday time. Any old excuse will do. Not as though you want to continue the friendship. "Let it go"!

Marelli must be in the tunnel. Or she's gone incognito ....

tchgrin

A lot of people seem to have similar ideas. Perhaps if we all phone/text you it could be a bit overkill!

Elegran Fri 26-Dec-14 11:51:58

Would you like a text from a "neighbour" to tell you that she is a bit concerned because she thought she saw a light/movement/smoke in your house and she knows you are away?

....mind you, it des make our 'billynomates' Christmas day seem rather pleasant now smile....

That happened to us a few years ago; made friends with a couple on holiday and kept in touch for a while afterwards [never stayed with them, though]. Alarm bells started to ring when they'd mentioned that they'd voted for the BNP at the last election shock so I was a bit careful about how I let th friendchip develop. Eventually I just stopped sending them cards etc. The downside is that I didn't swap contact numbers with most of the people I travelled round America with and I regret it so much now. You can't make up a 'reason' to leave, Marelli; it's bad karma, but the weather could be a lifeline. Good luck!

Dig an escape tunnel.

I do not think that ill health will work because you may be invited to sit in their local A&E for 5 hours or so.

I think that somebody checked inside your house and noticed a drip in a bedroom from the loft so you must go home to investigate. A bucket is holding the drips but DH must investigate I think.

Katek Fri 26-Dec-14 10:06:26

Ill health always good option....how good an actress are you?!?

vampirequeen Fri 26-Dec-14 09:58:06

They can't be because we don't have any boring members.

sunseeker Fri 26-Dec-14 09:52:53

Hope you aren't expected to invite them to yours for next year! An emergency call from home sounds like the best move, if that can't be arranged then you can say you are nervous about travelling in bad weather so would like to leave early in view of the forecast. Let us know if you manage to get away. Just had a dreadful thought - they aren't GNs are they?

pompa Fri 26-Dec-14 09:47:34

Something non serious but that cannot be ignored, like next doors cat locked in your garage.

Grannyknot Fri 26-Dec-14 09:18:34

What a fix to be in! You've done Christmas now, just say thanks and you've decided to head for home.

I hope you haven't encouraged GN forum membership! tchgrin

Kiora Fri 26-Dec-14 09:04:18

Oh dear this sounds like a a sitcom on the television. Make any excuse and leave. E-mailing somone and asking them to make up a plausable lie to get you home sounds like a good idea. It's what I'd do. Good luck. Please let us know how you manage to escape. I'm a noisy gransnetters tchgrin

kittylester Fri 26-Dec-14 09:00:51

The weather forecast includes talk of travel disruptions Marelli and I know how much you hate being out on dangerous conditions! tchgrin

Or you could tell them the truth to ensure you never have to see them again!!

Lilygran Fri 26-Dec-14 08:56:27

Depends where you are but there is bad weather forecast for a lot of the north half of Britain. Up to four inches of snow and freezing cold, they said.

Charleygirl Fri 26-Dec-14 08:55:09

It should read "not stiflingly hot"

Charleygirl Fri 26-Dec-14 08:54:32

How awful. I agree, I think get in touch with somebody to ring you to spin a yarn about having to return home asap. 3 days is torturous under those conditions. If my ex in laws were not dead I would have thought that you were describing them although the house was stiflingly hot!

pompa Fri 26-Dec-14 08:53:52

Emergency call from home sounds good to me. Text someone who can call you.

Anya Fri 26-Dec-14 08:43:06

Matelli I've been in a situation like this and I do sympathise. I think you just need to bite the bullet and go. Find any excuse but do it. You'll probably never see them again anyway.

Nelliemoser Fri 26-Dec-14 08:39:37

Marelli I sympathise. Text a relative to ring you as Marmight suggests.

Where are you? We could organise a flying squad of GNrs to rush to your aid, lay siege to their house and demand you are released forthwith. tchwink

Agus Fri 26-Dec-14 08:30:26

Nothing worse Marelli. Migraine, tummy bug that you wouldn't want to spread?

annsixty Fri 26-Dec-14 08:24:32

Oh dear marelli it sounds like everyone's worst fears. I would be looking very closely at the weather forecast and saying you really need to get home while you can as is looks as though the weather is going to be bad. Good luck.

Marmight Fri 26-Dec-14 08:17:52

Sounds awful Mareli. Can you organise an 'emergency' phone call from home? You have been flooded/burgled/a family member has been taken 'ill' and you have to return home forthwith!

Marelli Fri 26-Dec-14 08:09:09

Not Amy kind - any kind!
