There's nowt so queer as folk

Once when I was in Durham, a singer called Jack Foley was singing Music of the Night in the market square. I suddenly found tears streaming down my face. I looked at the woman next to me, and she was crying too.

Pearl Fishers duet with Bjorling and Merrill does it for me every time. A song/piece of music is only 'right' for me if the hair on my arms stands up.

A friend is a great believer in alternative medicine. He is currently paying a small fortune for sound treatment. Basically he logs on to a certain website, closes his eyes and listens to weird noises (reminded me of the original Dr Who sounds). He reckons this has cured him of bad headaches. I think it's just lightened his wallet.

Possibly very soothing if you need that. but not the same as a piece of music that goes straight to your tear ducts though.

Hypnotism? If you believe that it will set your scalp tingling, maybe it will.

It seems to be mostly film of young women talking very, very quietly and close to in a warm light and hair brushing and stuff. Not sexual. A bit like a mother talking to a baby to get it to sleep.

Got bored very quickly.

Perhaps I should have watched for longer - but I want my coffee.

Handyman - I agree about The Last Post. - especially at the Menin Gate in Ypres, 8pm ...the silence and emotion is awesome... then the bugler plays.

I heard this on the Today programme this morning. Must admit the sounds had no effect on me. One thing which always makes the hairs on my neck stand up is a bugler playing the Last Post.

I must say that my scalp doesn't react to the music though, it is the palms of my hands.

(Remember the old trick of saying that the first sign of madness is hair on the palms of the hands, then falling about laughing at all those who automatically took a look at their palms. Hands up all those who couldn't resist a peek this time either?)

ps There used to be a programme on Radio 3 called The Tingle Factor,about this kind of music.

Sometimes music brings me to tears, especially Bach eg the opening chorus of Wachet Auf .

For me it's a 80/1 winning bet at the Cheltenham Festival ....

Sometimes it happens if I am listening to someone with a lovely speaking voice.

Du Pre does play it with passion. I believe she studied with Tortelier?

I have both Rostropovitch and Paul Tortellier CDs of the Dvorak but prefer du Pre in the Elgar. I heard Tortellier playing the Elgar in the Usher Hall back in the 60s and the Dvorak in Nottingham about ten years later.

Not videos, but some violin and cello music do it for me - Mendelssohn's violin concerto and Dvorak's cello concerto to name but two.

Hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear him sing, Colm Wilkinson is another one, makes me tingle all over, the music dears !!!!!!
