Edwina Currie - is she 'too old' to be talking about sex?

I'm not a big fan of hers or anything, but why can't she say she finds men attractive? she's in her 60's not her 90's.

rosequartz Sat 06-Dec-14 14:43:06

You decided to add the word 'sleazy' and I find that ridiculous having watched the program

POGS I think it was me who said 'sleazy' in the first instance, FarNorth was just repeating what I said, don't get cross with her. grin

I don't think I am a prude, but I do think that double standards sometimes apply - if a man in his 60s was flirting with either of my DDs (who are most certainly not prudes! then I think they would refer to him as a 'sleaze-ball', so it is probably a term that I picked up from them.

Perhaps some people think it is absolutely right that older women should be able to behave as many men have behaved for years, but not everyone would find it so.

Yes, it is drivel TV, can be boring, can be hilarious. But at least Edwina is not boring!

A case of mistaken identity I think, POGS! confused

POGS Sat 06-Dec-14 14:01:58

Far North

You have addressed me in person and I haven't a clue what your talking about in your first sentence. confused

As for your second sentence I won't respond I think it is obvious what your implication is.

Come to think of it yes I will.

I said it's light hearted drivel with a grin.

You decided to add the word 'sleazy' and I find that ridiculous having watched the program.

POGS you said I thought feminism was all about what men can do, we can do better. We are equal if not even better.

Yes, we can do anything better than men but we don't have to do everything they do.
I agree with rosequartz that similar behaviour from a man of her age would be seen as sleazy, and so should hers be.
If people enjoy light-hearted, sleazy drivel then of course that's up to them

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 11:46:13

POGS - I agree. But even light hearted drivel can start debates. I think that's what Edwina is doing (as she always does in her own idiosyncratic, brash way). What is interesting is that she is getting quite a lot of public support.

PS, I haven't admitted it until now, as a relative newcomer to GN, but I am older than Edwina.

Lona Sat 06-Dec-14 11:24:16

grin Me too POGS.
It was actually Jake's idea to give her an all over body massage, but we didn't see it happen, thank goodness!

POGS Sat 06-Dec-14 11:19:17

If you watch I'm a Celebrity you will know it is just a group of people living 24/7 in a camp and the cameras are waiting for tittle tattle to appear.

That's exactly what has happened here . An older woman and a younger man have 'teased' each other with sexual innuendo. Nothing more nothing less, it's banter .

The press has 'gone for' Edwina Currie because she is who she is and folk who haven't seen the program have fallen for it.

It's a crap show with absolutely no intellect to it and it should be taken in context, it's just light hearted drivel !!!! That's why I like it grin

Am watching the TV programme right now: Either Ant or Dec (can't tell the difference between them) has just described her as the kind of person he doesn't like, as a "sexually aggressive female politician". Good job she has a thick skin.

onmyown Fri 05-Dec-14 21:35:07

NanKate,

As for her hubby, he sent her a very very loving letter which was read out to Edwina in the camp a few days ago. He is an ex-policeman and maybe understands her very well. She calls him JJ - I believe his name is also John so she has to distinguish between the two.

She comes across as a woman who relates very strongly towards men and enough of them like it enough to keep her happy!

I always felt she was tough on her daughters, though tchsad- but I can't remember the details of what happened when her marriage to their father ended.

PS - the hunk is called Jake. They are together in the jungle right now.

NanKate Fri 05-Dec-14 21:18:53

Can I join in even though I don't watch the programme?

I think Edwina needs her eyes testing if she fancied and had an affair with John Major, one of the most unsexy men I have ever seen in my opinion.

Also what must her poor hubby be thinking if she keeps lusting after younger men. He could of course be enjoying having a break from her so he can watch the telly in bed and have a nice cup of cocoa in peace and quiet. grin

Ana Fri 05-Dec-14 21:04:21

Melanie Sykes, on the other hand, is always whingeing about something or other...hmm

Ana Fri 05-Dec-14 21:03:19

I agree, janerowena. She may be outspoken and sometimes have an abrasive manner, but at least she did make it in her chosen career (at a time when politics was still seen as a male province).

onmyown Fri 05-Dec-14 21:00:32

janeainsworth - it wasn't made clear whose idea it was for him to give her a massage - or maybe I missed something - was it just TV titillation?

I will watch again now - I am intrigued by reality TV when a personality interests me - otherwise I find it boring and I switch over or switch off. And I have found Edwina interesting over the years, including before the revelations about her and John Major - that seemed a bit tacky but interesting being out in the open and from a woman.

janerowena Fri 05-Dec-14 20:45:45

I liked her outspokenness in a time when women were meant to keep quiet and stay in the background and look decorative. My father met her and said she looked better in real life than she did on screen, much more attractive.

rosequartz Fri 05-Dec-14 20:18:19

GT tchgrin mine is probably too old for Edwina!

I would think she would be a great person to have on your side, but not agin you!

Nonu Fri 05-Dec-14 20:05:30

GT don"t quite understand !!

Please absent .... don't put me off my dinner!

GrannyTwice Fri 05-Dec-14 19:07:35

Nonu - men do a lot of things I would never want to do - not a question of always wanting to do what they do only better

GrannyTwice Fri 05-Dec-14 19:05:53

Onmyown - if she was your neighbour you might have to lock up your
fit older man

Obviously misinterpreted.

I don't know anything about this event but the "blue underpants of power" last time says it all for me.

janeainsworth Fri 05-Dec-14 18:26:19

Thank you onmyown.
So whose idea was the massage - the young hunk's, or Edwina's?

rosequartz Fri 05-Dec-14 18:13:53

I'm not saying she shouldn't say or do anything she wants - but I was just saying that if a man was behaving like that, then the sisterhood would be up in arms and saying he was sleazy!!

onmyown Fri 05-Dec-14 17:59:04

janeainsworth - for info - last night Edwina was shown flirting with a fit, tanned, muscle-rippling hunky young man (can't remember his name). (He was loving whatever attention was thrown in his direction and was said to be flirting with all the women on the show.)

The two of them were shown together, with him agreeing to give her a full body massage. "Which parts of your body?" he asked her. "Shoulders and hips please" she replied. He was a bit taken aback by this. There was no screening of any massage taking place. Did it? Or didn't it?

She was also shown saying, in a thoughtful, musing way, how beautiful young bodies are to look at.

I agree. I love to look at beautiful young bodies, male and female, but I have no desire whatsoever to make any contact with them.

My problem is that I am attracted to (fit) older men, I have been in a relationship with one for years, but we are both getting much older now - - - and so we are having to re-negotiate what works for us, separately and together. Not always easy.

Yes, Edwina is Marmite - she's a tough cookie but I admire her brash, outspoken women-are-up-for-it qualities. Not sure if I would like her as my MP - but for me she might be a fun person to have as a neighbour, though! grin

petallus Fri 05-Dec-14 17:41:58

I find men attractive but not young ones.

However, sometimes I'm enjoying having a bit of a teasing chat with a man in, say, his forties and I suddenly think 'oh God, I hope he doesn't think I'm flirting'.
