My 13-year old DGD is now fully vegetarian. We are entertainingher and her family to lunch on NY Day this year but I haven't a clue what to give her. My DD, her Mum says not to build the meal round DGD but I have t o do something special for her as well.

My mind is a blank! Can anyone suggest something delicious I can do just for her along with the usual roasties and veg which the rest of us will be having with a roast of some sort?

Used the foil. Its delicious! Will definitely make it again.
Many thanks, we all enjoyed it. It is now added to my repertoire!

I've done both mrsmopp. The foil route does ensure it can come out in one piece just in case any of it sticks.

mrsmopp Thu 27-Nov-14 23:23:29

Anniezz09, I will make one tomorrow to try it out.

Do you line the loaf tin with foil, or just brush with oil, in case it sticks?

rockgran Thu 27-Nov-14 18:59:57

I'm going to try that nut loaf recipe too, anniezzz09. I usually do "Chestnut and red wine pate en croute" by Rose Elliot but that could be a nice change.

I am bristling!

All the 'trimmings' roast veg, yorkshire pud etc are fine as long as not cooked in meat fat. A small side dish in the oven using oil to cook will do... Ditto gravy - keep some without the meat juice (ie blood).

Then any number of wonderful veg specials to replace the meat.

Some 10% of the population is now vegetarian. Really, what's the big deal?

You are all switching to at least one day a week of no meat, aren't you? Livestock farming accounts for 30% of climate change, it has to stop.

mrsmopp I hope you enjoy it. We've made it for about 15 years now and whenever we have tried to suggest an alternative there is a howl of protest from the junior brigade 'but that's what we always have'!

durhamjen Wed 26-Nov-14 23:11:00

Maybe that's where it came from, anno. I still would not like to follow his diet, even though I am vegetarian. I do not like milk.

mrsmopp Wed 26-Nov-14 16:48:23

Annie, love the nut roast recipe you have posted, cant wait to try it. Not going to wait till Christmas for sure! Served with roast potatoes and parsnips plus loads of veg it beats turkey hands down. Been a veggie for years, meat does not tempt me at all.

So - apparently John Wesley invented the 5:2 diet!

rockgran Wed 26-Nov-14 10:25:26

I love that quote, mrsmop.

mrsmopp Wed 26-Nov-14 00:17:56

"Can she have wafer thin ham, Barbara??"

Quote from the Royle Family.

durhamjen Tue 25-Nov-14 17:27:47

Talking about accepting food that was offered, John Wesley would not eat meat in anyone's house that he visited. He thought that it was best to accept the food that would be cheapest, so if he was bread and meat were put on the table, he would eat the bread and leave the meat for the host family. He lived by a rule of self-denial. He fasted two days a week and often lived on just bread and milk.

Cheers, hope the meal goes well! wine

I did think of fish rose but I'm more of a meat eater than a fish fan so am doing a roast meat - might be lamb (DD's favourite) or pork or a 3-bird roast. That is still to be firmed up.

I have decided though - having ascertained today that DGD does not like mushrooms - that I am going to do the filo pastry baked goats cheese pielet for her. The recipe I have is for a pie but I shall make a small version and call it a pielet. She would live on cheeses so I think that will please her.

I am very grateful to everyone for triggering my thought processes and amazed that my original simple request has lead to such a long and interesting thread. That;s the wonder of GN - it wanders off all over but is never dull! smile wine Cheers all!

Back to the OP if Gagagran is still looking hmm perhaps not!!

Unless you have already planned your meal for NY and your DGD is still eating fish, then you could make a sumptuous meal with fish as the main course. I remember years ago visiting my DN and she had made a wondrous fish pie - several different types of fish and prawns in a delicious sauce encased in a filo pastry casing. It was the size of a very large dinner plate and rose magnificently about 12" - rather like a huge dome.
(can't find a recipe, sorry)
Your DD says not to build the meal around DGD, but everyone may be fed up with turkey anyway.

Feetle I know what you mean about the focus of a dish, and to me, it's the protein element. I think that's what omnivores perhaps struggle with - that in some vegetarian dishes, the protein isn't very obvious or plentiful.
But now we are being told that most of us eat a lot more protein than we need anyway.

rockgran Tue 25-Nov-14 15:41:47

People become vegetarian for many reasons - I wonder why it still causes such ill feeling when it is now quite common. It never seems to fail to raise a heated discussion.

Not all of us Feetkebaum. We occasionally eat game and very occasionally, red meat, and even then, the meat is not the focus.

It's much easier to look at the great vegetarian cuisines of the world than try to adapt a Northern European diet.

For example, all the risottos, pasta meals, dishes which use filo, puff or shortcrust pastry, South Indian meals and many others based on a combination of sympathetic vegetables and pulses.

Hugh Fearnly Whitingstall wrote an excellent book on this theme with heaps of ideas.
