Wind Chimes

The main problem is if it's of a deciduous habit

Ooh, I love a bit of naffness!

I may have to experiment with some tiny wind-chimes to adorn my bush - they'd have to be tiny as the foliage isn't exactly robust or luxuriant...

The only tinkling allowed in my garden is the ice in a gin and tonic

I like the peace and quiet of my garden – except when other people or Mr absent are mowing the lawns – and am relieved that no one nearby has artificial tinkling going on every time a breeze blows. I think wind chimes are really rather naff and serve the same sort of mindless purpose [deliberate oxymoron] as the music they play in the lifts of department stores and airports, but chacun a son goût, as long as they don't annoy other people.

I love wind chimes, although I don't have any up. I worry it might irritate the neighbours.

Oh, I have read the Christmas bling thread, Ana (of course I have!) - was just enthralled by the thought of a musical effect too!

But my front bush's fading foliage just rustles quietly, sad to say. Maybe some adornment is needed....

Reminds me of Alan Titchmarsh advising on water features - 'you want a gentle trickle, not the sound of a dray horse relieving itself!

I can! Mind you my neighbour if we're sitting outside together says my fountain makes her want the loo!?

Nonu I prefer the sound of the bamboo wind chimes, we have one on the branch of a silver birch, which clonks rather than tinkles tinnily. No neighbours have complained, but we take it down for the Winter anyway, as it could be annoying on a very windy day.I think they sound rather nice and can't think why people don't like them.

Gosh, Roses what a creative person you are! Do you have fairy lights too? A sort of son et lumiere bush?

Mine is bamboo too!

I have one hanging from my bush at the front... it's not only decorative, but makes a pleasing noise if ruffled by a breeze.[innocentface emoticon.]

We used to have some bamboo ones, yes it is a much gentler sound - very Oriental!

It is actually the dining room, ana, and just gentle breezes when the windows are open. I do hope the neighbours can't hear the chimes! The chimes are actually bamboo, though, not those tinkly things, and the sound is very soft.

Do you get much wind in your conservatory, Ariadne?

I have a couple of wind chimes in the conservatory (built circa 2004 as if anyone's interested) so only we can hear them. They would drive me mad if my neighbours had a garden full.

I have a solar powered fountain in my (probably Georgian) front Italianate courtyard. Very restful. In the back garden I have an electric fountain to keep the wildlife pond aerated.

My former neighbour had a wind chime but I hardly noticed it after a while. I wouldn't dream of inflicting one on my neighbours. I do have one, but as it's also a suncatcher, it hangs inside my window and is only audible when the window is open - certainly not today!

My neighbours on either side both have multiple sets of windchimes which drive me nuts, especially as I like to sleep with the window open. It's like hearing bottles being smashed all night. However, as both sets of neighbours are very kind and helpful, I don't feel able to say anything, just grit my teeth.

I live in a terrace of houses, where next door's wind chime by the front door drove me mad at night. Unfortunately, while she was away on holiday, the hanging cord frayed and 'broke' [guilty emoticon]. It has not been seen or heard since!

nonu Bungalow. Walls round garden but only about 4ft high.

My neighbour used to have a bamboo fountain thing over her pool which filled up with water until the balance went over, the water emptied and the bamboo tapped on something as it tipped back again. That was repetitive and pretty annoying.

Oo-er. That's a bit of" name dropping" 'nonu !!! Although come to think of it our old house( 18th century farmhouse grade 2 listed) didn't have any walls at all. Thank goodness there were no windchimes nearby ! They may be lovely for those who have chosen to have them but the sound is very intrusive and can be like fingernails on a blackboard. Question of taste. Last dog used to think windchimes were the bell a neighbor's cat wore and got very excited.

I have one in the porch, but only because my granddaughter made it at school, its lovely
