Bags I said I didn't like nurses calling me darling.
I wasn't complaining, though.
Surely one is allowed to express likes and dislikes without being accused of complaining.

OK, I apologise for sounding off. It just seems like complaining to me when people say "I don't like..." and when the word patronising is mentioned and the phrase "as bad as".

Very hard to respond when you're so keen on your multiple posts, bags...

In short, such expressions are nearly always used in a friendly way in my experience. Maybe some of you are just too up tight about your precious dignity when dignity isn't at issue at all.

Most of us on this thread are not complaining, bags.

I agree that all 'terms of endearment' are really unobjectionable unless said in a sneery, patronising way.

Pal doesn't mean pal when it's used like that.
Darlin' doesn't mean darlin when it's used like that.
and so on and so forth ad nauseam.

Listen to the meaning—which I think is usually an awkward kind of "I don't know what the heck to call you but I feel I have to call you something and this is what everyone calls me"—not the words. It's just padding in a slightly awkward social setting, usually one that is never going to happen again between those particular people.

Pal is Glasgow
My darling is Wrexham (and no doubt other places)
Luv is various parts of Yorkshire and Lancashire
Pet is Newcastle and thereabouts
Hen is Edinburgh and Dundee

I have absolutely no issue with anybody calling me love, my duck, dear, darling, pet etc. etc.

I know some GN have said on occassion they are upset by it but I remember my dad in hospital last year saying to me " The nurses are lovely and they call me my love or darling and I feel you are here with me".

I don't mind as no one else calls me Darlin' now, but I really don't like being addressed as 'Pal' by a yoof young enough to be my grandson

I don't mind as long as it's done in a friendly, chatty way. It's far better than being ignored

Hi Nonu x I don't mind at all really as OH calls me "Darlin'" I think it depends who is saying it and how you take it yourself far better than being called something else I think

I don't like being called darlin' by nurses. It seems condescending, somehow, whether they are male or female.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that one - but no one seems to dare call me that (yet)!

I don't think darlin' is as bad as dear. A female of any age could be called darlin'. 'Dear' they save for the ones they consider to be little old ladies. Grrr!

I don't mind at all! Love, darlin', hun, bring 'em on - and one young man in our local Asda seems to address everyone as 'my lovely'!

Depends who's doing the addressing, obviously
