How about contacting the Law Society and seeing if they can point you in the right direction regarding a lawyer? Hope you sort it out soon. It's brave to emigrate to another country although lovely of course to be with your family.

You can't actually get to speak to anyone at the American embassy unless you're already going through the process.

I really want someone in England who I can speak to face to face about it. I've tried a couple of people in the USA who don't seem particularly interested and the 6 hour time difference is difficult. Also they won't talk on Skype or FaceTime.

Do be very sure about the medical insurance! I have come across so many people in the US who have found that their insurance fell very short when faced with serious illness and new treatments.

We had to jump through so many hoops to enable our American son in law to live over here. I imagine moving in the opposite direction must be even more difficult.

bookdreamer It seems that the sponsoring is being taken care of if I understand correctly, but I would advise you work with an immigration lawyer in the States to look at the nitty-gritty and financial aspects, which can be considerable. Face to face with someone at the American Embassy in London re. you situation is something I would also do. Make sure you get the right department. Meanwhile, perhaps your son-in-law will be able to look at this from the Texan law perspective and connect you to the appropriate people.
This may well be a long process, but getting it right is imperative.

Health insurance is a minefield out there - so I hope your son-in-law's insurance covers all possible future health issues you may have.

Thanks for your replies. My daughter can sponsor me and we are going through that process now. However before we spend lots of money and go through a right rigmarole I need to know if I'm eligible to live over there.

We have tried to look into it in great detail but it's a minefield and a very costly one.

That's why its important I get the appropriate legal advice.

I think there is something like being sponsored by a family member when they have citizenship - my son and his family live in USA and will be applying for citizenship soon - great implications when you die with property if you are not a citizen I believe. He has mentioned to me how he would be able to help should I ever wish to move there. It might be easier for your daughter to find out about the ins and outs than you. Good luck if you do decide that is the way to go. X x

Would it be possible to visit on a long visa and speak with a US lawyer. This is what a friend did.

You need to look into the visa requirements. The USA is very particular about who they allow to live there (not like the UK .)

Yes I have. Seems I can go on my son's medical insurance.

I don't know a good lawyer but have you considered the health care implications?
