DH has just come in and informed me that of all social media sites going, Gransnet is the fastest growing. Are we not popular.

We could count ourselves! Just need to start a thread where everyone posts a consecutive number (and each person only posts once)!
Any silent lurkers could join in too!

Or we could have two counting threads, one for daily/regular posters and one for absolutely everyone (daily posters, daily readers, once a weekers, once a seasoners, competitioners, complete lurkers etc).

Just an idea. But yes it is quality over quantity.

More general I think as he mentioned Facebook and something else that I'd never heard of in the USA.

Elegran Tue 23-Sept-14 08:24:32

Could that be the survey we did a little while ago? Or is it a more general one?

hildajenniJ Tue 23-Sept-14 08:20:51

He heard it on the radio yesterday morning, when in the car coming home from work. I don't know which station he was listening to. Apparently someone? has been doing a survey.

But if we have only 100 members. 100 extra members means we double in size, but if you are, say Mumsnet, and have 100,000 members you would need to get another 100,000 members to double in size, so our rapid growth may just be a function of our small size.

I think the important thing is whether it fulfils a need. I remember feeling very isolated as a new mother with a small baby and would have found something like Mumsnet a godsend. Now 37 years later, post retirement and with a husband with communication problems, I find Gransnet a way of avoiding isolation. It's lovely to meet up with friends and family in the real world, but not always possible. I find it is comforting to know that Gransnet is there. Such lovely people (mainly) grin

I found something saying the older age group was the fastest growing demographic online.

Also from 2012 something saying Gransnet was
"the fast-growing social networking site for Britain’s 14 million grandparents"

Not sure if the latter one means in comparison to other sites for older people.

So I just did a search for fastest growing social media website, and two said pinterest. There were three other names depending on which site you looked on. I presume that if I did a search using a different search engine I would get different names. Gransnet wasn't listed.

Well this member is expanding on her own!

Ana Mon 22-Sept-14 20:30:09

Yes, but I'd still be interested to know where hilda's DH got his information from!

kittylester Mon 22-Sept-14 20:13:13

Quite absent grin

absent Mon 22-Sept-14 20:10:05

Quality is better than quantity Ana. grin

Ana Mon 22-Sept-14 20:08:38

Just doubtful whether Gransnet's faster-growing than other social media websites as the OP claims, that's all. I was using Mumsnet as an example...hmm

thatbags Mon 22-Sept-14 20:05:46

Why compare? Gransnet is not competing with mumsnet.

Ana Mon 22-Sept-14 20:02:47

I agree about the numbers, absent.

But you only have to look at Mumsnet to see how many posts there are in an hour, never mind a day - Gransnet sometimes barely covers 24 hours on the Active page.

absent Mon 22-Sept-14 19:59:55

apricot I think you will find that there are considerably more gransnetters than 100. I could probably list more than that without much effort and there seem to have been quite a few new members recently. Then there are those who don't post or post only rarely.

Starling Mon 22-Sept-14 18:45:22

Hello jamsidedown. I have only been here a few weeks myself!

jamsidedown Mon 22-Sept-14 18:42:06

Hello everyone
As a newbie I am doing my bit to swell the numbers, bucking the shrinking trend

apricot Mon 22-Sept-14 18:35:19

I rather thought Gransnet was shrinking, not growing. Would whoever's in charge at GransnetBungalows dare reveal how many active members there are? I'd guess fewer than 100.
I'm not trying to upset others, just a bit sad that Gransnet seems to have never really taken off. I'd decamp to Mumsnet if there were lots more grannies there but there are very few and I'd feel very out of place among the yummy mummys.

Starling Mon 22-Sept-14 18:13:59

Will he reveal his sources hildajenniJ ?

Nelliemoser Mon 22-Sept-14 12:07:07

You see its addictive! I only came in here as I cannot find the green garden twine in the usual place.

The computer was on, so I just took and peek and 5 posts later nothing done.

Nelliemoser Mon 22-Sept-14 12:04:05

I am just darn glad its here.

Nelliemoser Mon 22-Sept-14 12:03:40

soutra Me cynical! How could you think that of me. I am devastated.
Goes off in Huff. wink

Soutra Mon 22-Sept-14 12:00:36

Oh but how cynical wink

Nelliemoser Mon 22-Sept-14 11:56:12

It could be due to that GN competition.
