Now I want a grammar thread

Not because of pedantry. My recent use of a phrase in the subjunctive mood, which I think was widely misunderstood, is the cause of this plea.

Some people argue that we don't use the subjunctive mood in English. I argue that we do; at least I do. I think the problem is that it is difficult to recognise, as my experience yesterday showed.

What do other people think about English language subjunctive clauses? Do you use them? Do people understand you when you do?

Not insulting and a suitable riposte to what had gone before.

thatbags Fri 12-Sept-14 16:49:15

elegran has given the correct interpretation.

Call me a liar if you dare.

thatbags Fri 12-Sept-14 16:50:27

ALL of you, including those at HQ. Bloody ridiculous fuss. angry

thatbags Fri 12-Sept-14 16:53:01

And I started THIS thread as a way of taking the ridiculous fuss in my stride and being amused about it. I'm not amused any more. It takes quite a lot to make me angry.

Ana Fri 12-Sept-14 17:05:19

Perhaps it would have been better not to start this thread, as there didn't seem to be any sort of ridiculous fuss beforehand.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 12-Sept-14 17:16:00

You called her posts stupid. No matter how you wrap it up.

annodomini Fri 12-Sept-14 17:40:58

God save the queen isn't a statement. If it was, it would be God saves the queen. It is a wish: may God save the queen; or conceivably a command (imperative) God! Save the queen! (tongue in cheek smiley).

Galen Fri 12-Sept-14 17:45:37

It's an order!

thatbags Fri 12-Sept-14 17:48:18

No, jingle, I said that even IF I thought what she said stupid, I would not be offended. IF is the important word. Call that wrapping if you like but it is not equal to "what you said is stupid" however you wrap it up.

In addition, in discussion it is perfectly in order (the rules of debate) to say that you think an opinion is stupid or wrong or whatever. And that is not equal to saying the person is stupid.

I do not agree with the people who want to vote for Scottish independence. I disagree with their view on that issue. That doesn't mean I can't get along with them about other things or that I think them stupid in general.

The same applies on gransnet.

thatbags Fri 12-Sept-14 17:52:19

I can't even remember why I was supposed to find some posts offensive. The point is, I didn't, and that's what I said. I said I wasn't offended and wouldn't be whatever she said. It then seems that she took offence at that.

Logic requires me to shrug at this point.

Soutra Fri 12-Sept-14 18:07:15

Why is it OK for one member to use terms like "balderdash" and "gullible"about another member's views and indeed about another member, but to take the huff when her own opinion is described as "stupid"?
Absolute balderdash. Don't be so gullible Niggly and don't believe a word of it Jane has made these allegations before and never came up with any facts to back them up.

Sauce for the goose? Just saying.

Best to draw a veil over the whole business?

nightowl Fri 12-Sept-14 18:07:47

What an unpleasant thread.

Perhaps we need a kindness thread rather than a grammar thread. We're never too old.

Soutra Fri 12-Sept-14 18:07:59

Correction "IF it had been stupid"

Ana Fri 12-Sept-14 18:13:43

I'm still not sure why this thread was started, and for whose benefit.

Still, it seems to have served its purpose - bags is vindicated and aka is the villain of the piece...angry

Ana Fri 12-Sept-14 18:15:47

Don't bother having a go at me, I've said all I'm going to.

GrannyTwice Fri 12-Sept-14 18:19:13

Phrases like tart old fool come to mind as well - the whiff of hypocrisy is in the air - again!!

nightowl Fri 12-Sept-14 18:20:13

Nail on head Ana

Think I'll toddle off for a while, this is not a nice place right now.

Nelliemoser Fri 12-Sept-14 18:21:14

Good heavens! This reads like something put of "Waiting for Godot."
Particularly if you do not know what went before.

Go away and come back tomorrow, Nelliemoser The smoke may have cleared by then, and the fire may have died down.

Nelliemoser Fri 12-Sept-14 18:24:49
