Good to hear a non northerner using phrase like 'a good bottoming'. I gave the cupboards in the utility a good bottoming last week. They contain tins with bits of paint in case of an emergency need to touch up a room, vases, a cheap microwave I bought when the kitchen was removed, a spare iron (these items preserved in case daughter ever moves out) and otherwise, dog food, dog training treats, spare dog leads, dog towels, dog blankets, dog ear clear and other bits of essential health treatment for - well dogs really. I'd gone to find a long training lead for the young dog, it was too hot to either garden, or sit in the garden, so I listened to the radio, and got bottoming. Great sense of satisfaction - and I don't think I have OCD on the domestic front

"Bottomed" our bedroom in advance of new bed - , our bed moved to spare room, carpet professionally cleaned, curtains cleaned, nets washed, no corner left unattacked by wipes/hoover/duster. It felt great - might even do it again some time. Wish I had had the energy to have a go at the contents of the drawers as well, but maybe that's for a rainy day

Get an oven cleaning company in, they are not horribly expensive and they leave your oven really like new. I had it done when we moved, as a courtesy for the people who bought our house ( and because we are still in the same village and I dont want to be talked about in hushed tones in the Coop). Once it has been done, it is easy to maintain and keep the oven clean, and would seriously recommend a silicone liner for the oven floor ( from lakeland). As to everything else, I keep bathrooms clean, and kitchen, and whizz vacuum around to keep fleas at bay, yes Silverfish the fleas are really bad this year

I have only heard of 'bottoming' because they say it in Coronation Street!

My oven now needs napalm- next week I think, the rest of this week is dedicated to golf unless it rains in which case its Agent Orange and me in the kitchen.

I never really do a bottoming out on a regular basis. When something starts to look like it's neglected I'll think about it .... like wardrobes or the oven..... then when the oven is eventually done I want to leave the oven door open so everyone can admire it. No one admires it.. only me !! I mentioned to hubby a week ago that if he felt like wanting something to do he could clean the oven. He says, you mean do the glass door (it needs dismantling to do it properly.
No.... says me.... I mean the whole oven.
I'm still waiting.

I "bottomed" one of my larger kitchen cupboards the other day, am ashamed to say that I found my egg poacher pan, which I always knew I had, but haven`t seen it for donkeys years!

Well, never heard of this expression before [and I am from the North.]I am not OCD about cleaning but...... hmmn, I do keep things clean and tidy on a sort of ad hoc basis, never need to do a Spring clean as such.

This thread inspired me to at last sort out all the chargers that have been breeding in my cupboard I have never thrown any away so I have found it increasingly difficult to find the one I need and to detach it from the others. Now I have them all in pristine order and all gadgets fully charged .Tomorrow I may make a start on the boxes in the loft.

I did threaten promise to go through all the cupboards/wardrobes in the house once I retired. I retired last October and I think I've done one! There is always something more interesting to do. Housework gets done when things start to look too bad or visitors are expected. Trouble is once it's done it needs doing again before long.

it is a well know illness to be fanatical to clean your house, OCD.
I do cleaning when I feel like it, Ive a cupboard not been emptied for 20 years and I keep meaning to do it, Im a bit scared that something might run out and bite me if I get started (just jokin).
My cats have fleas and Ive used so much spray and drops etc that Im beginning to feel OCD but I think Im getting on top of the problem. Its just the hot horrible weather, roll on winter.

Send him over PDQ he can bottom here any time he likes Sue - his reward will be........Wait for it....... a piece of my coffee cake.

My mum had two sets of curtains - winter and summer. They were changed every six months and washed or cleaned every time.
I do not clean as much as my mother did; although I do like to keep 'on top' of it I do not 'bottom' a room every week. Or every month.

DD was an army wife, she can't relax her cleaning regime, still cleans her hob with a toothbrush during one of her 'blitzs' as it's known in our family.

Bottoming is a thorough sort out and clean. Regular bottoming makes Spring Cleaning unnecessary - according to my mum!

As DD3 and the children have just moved in we have had to clear wardrobes and drawers which were full of stuff that had no other home - very cathartic to get rid of it all as we had forgotten we had, or needed, most of it.

I also had to clean out and clear (or bottom!!) my kitchen cupboards, my big pantry cupboard and under both stairs - really cathartic that was - but quite tiring!! That was to make way for all of her cake making equipment!! Apparently, we have to pass a hygiene inspection too - flipping heck!!

I love cleaning!!!! but not every day especially when the weather is nice. I find the kitchen cupboards need a good bottoming 0 which I thought meant clear out everything until you can see the bottom and then clean that. I believe its a northern saying and I'm not Northern. My Mother a cockney would have said ' a good do'. She strongly disapproved of Spring Cleaning she abhorred the idea of leaving cleaning of carpets, curtains and cupboards etc. over the Winter she liked everything always in prefect order - she had been in the Army and dad in the Royal Navy so they were fanatical cleaners as is my brother who was in the Army. I was a nurse and we scrubbed and polished For England in my day so I am stick with this habit but it does feel great when its done. Now the oven - that's a different matter for a different day.

I'm with you NanKate. I hate it. I do what is necessary and it's reasonably clean and tidy. I could never be obsessed like a few friends of mine.

My neighbour used to say that she 'bottomed a room once a week' and just skimmed around the rest every day! I assume she meant clean thoroughly from top to bottom. I must go and 'bottom' my fridge.

I hate housework, avoid it like the plague. I just keep things tidy and when it looks like lunar dust on the furniture I do a quick bit of dusting.

Roses are grandmothers would have called it Spring Cleaning.

I might Sue if I knew what 'bottoming* meant?!
