Dusty Springfield of course sang an anglicised version of 'Ne me quitte pas', 'If you go away', lyrics by Rod Mckuen who also did a (pretty horrible)version of it as did many others, but Dusty's one was the only one I liked. I must listen to Edith Piaf ( my mother had quite a few of her records) and Barb Jungr.
Jacques Brel wrote it for his long-term girlfriend (so I was told by a French boyfriend) when he got her pregnant and left her when he discovered it, as she refused a termination. He already had a wife and children, she raced back to Belgium, and the girlfriend lost her job as a very popular tv presenter because it caused such a scandal. He tried to get her back but she refused. You can just imagine how happy his wife must have been with the song!
