I've just called British Gas to report bad, potentially dangerous driving by one of their engineers! shock

On a stretch of road that I know very well, the resident shave to park in the road. It is narrow, goes downhill (unless of course you are going the other way confused and curves. We always go cautiously on it, as it is not uncommon to meet a vehicle coming the other way in the middle of the road.

I had been tootling along, seen nothing in my rear view mirror for ages, then suddenly there he was coming out of nowhere like the proverbial bat out of hell. I rounded the bed slowly, and sure enough in addition to the usual cars parked there was the recycling lorry. How the van driver didn't go straight into the back of me heaven knows. I was happy to wait until the recycling lorry moved off, but Mr Gas Engineer wasn't, and decided to pull out and overtake both me and the lorry. He was very lucky that there was nothing coming the other way, because there was no way he could have seen it if there was.

I found myself parked next to him in Lidls car park, and then found him behind me in the checkout queue clutching a pair of Crocs. (Yes, they were a bargain if you like that sort of thing, but I don't think that they would have sold out if he had just waited instead of driving as if a spanner short of a tool bag)

I think I may have earned back some brownie points though, as on the drive home I was following a car that looked as if it's exhaust was about to drop off. I flashed lights, then tooted and eventually they pulled over in a safe place. I pulled up behind them and ran out to explain. The woman (who wasn't in the first flush of youth, shall we say, but then who of us is?) seemed quite relieved to see that I wasn't a mad axe murderer or about to hijack her car. I told her why I had flashed etc, then got down to have a look. It wasn't her exhaust, it was a large plastic bag that the council give out for recycling the newspapers blush but she seemed to appreciate it anyway.

I was about to tuck it into the verge, but then thought that it might blow out again and cause problems, so I took it home. No coincidence at all that I just happened to need one, honest!

You just have to hope that their near shave puts them off driving like that for the next few months, don't you. I can remember when it was quite common to call the police and report bad drivers - Ex was reported! Wrongly as it happened, we were going round a bend in a built-up area very slowly, but our exhaust had just died. So an elderly man thought we were going fast, but we weren't. The police came to our house! Ex didn't like to admit to a faulty exhaust at the time, but he was cautioned. Can you imagine anyone coming round now to do that? As I said, it was on a bend, no other car behind us - if he had been going fast the man wouldn't have been able to take down our number!

But I was overtaken on a blind bend last Wednesday evening, the car almost went head-on into a coach coming the other way. I beeped at him for a very long time - the coach driver took both his hands off the steering wheel in shock! No time to get his number, I was so angry I shook with rage all the way to my friend's.

All these "shaves" had me confused - near shave, the residents shave, then I realised the residents are not shaving - "the resident-s have to ..." grin

I hate the tailgaters and the people who try to bully you into driving faster when you are already at the speed limit.

The worst driving I have seen was when I pulled out of a side road onto a main road when the 4x4 behind me on the side road overtook me on the wrong side of the keep left bollard!!

I'm with you on tailgaters, sunseeker I think I have said before that many years ago on the school run through narrow, winding lanes there was a woman who always seemed to drive right up my arse far too close.

One day I picked a place that was safe and deliberately stopped in the middle of the road, got out and opened that tailgate on my estate car. She leant out of her window and asked me what the hell I was doing. I said, "sorry, I thought you wanted to get in the back, I was just opening the door for you!"
