Back in the 1960's / 1970's My grandma and grandad looked after my sister and I when we were children to allow my mum to go out to work part time. My gran worked 2 jobs too but somehow she managed to jiggle things to look after us. My parents never looked after my children (so it seemed to skip a generation) and I look after mine to allow my son and DiL to work.
Nothing's changed that much really. Low paid parents will always have to work and most grandparents will step up to help with childcare. I wouldn't have it any other way. Only wish I didn't have to go to work myself and I would do an extra day.
