Seething! - and won't be able to sleep

I am about to let of some steam or the chances of sleep are remote!

I have been trying to get the company to whom our LA farm out drainage services to come and sort out the problems in the village that result in torrents running down our lane and up to the back of our house. The water runs so fast that it carries huge amounts of debris that instantly block the gulleys and result in water overflowing into the garden behind our house, and, in spite of us having an enormous storm drain running under our house, we finish up with water seeping in through the stonework.

In order to prevent this, my OH, who has PD and atrial fibrillation, has to go out in full protective gear as the rain pours down and clear the council drains himself. This is a man who cannot weed for more than half an hour without collapsing in a heap and being short of breath. He has to keep going back to do it as it takes only minutes to block up again.

I will not bore you with the saga of hopeless communication that has ensued, resulting in us staying in all week as a visit was promised. They deny that they said this! - as if we would have made it up!

Their local rep lives in the village and has just taken up this post - and, sad to say, we know he is as thick as a brick - and patronsing with it - which is the potent combination that has resulted in my ire getting 'igher and 'igher! I have received such patronising emails from him full of pseudo-erudite language (that he uses wrongly!) and I do not know where to turn. My OH's health is at stake here and it is like banging my head against a brick wall.

Mishap find out who your local councillors are and email them. I've had a couple of issues resolved like this. Make sure you mention OH's health issues.

You could send a letter to your local paper.

There is also an ombudsman to whom you could complain.

grumppa Thu 03-Jul-14 23:37:24

And copy the correspondence to your MP.

Can your GP support you re OH health issues?

Apparently if you tweet about it, you will often get a response!

Tweeting is the way to go. It's quite easy to do. I got a result in from my local council after four months of fruitless activity. Because it's public they hop. Keep tweeting with the tag @name of council every ten minutes.

I tweeted when a well known window company customer services were useless, never called back and weren't addressing my complaints. Within 24 hours I had someone visiting my house and problem sorted. Give it a go.

whenim64 Fri 04-Jul-14 07:00:33

Yes, tweet the problem, let us know how we can find you and we'll retweet it so they come running as Twitter gathers pace within minutes. Works every time.

I hope you did manage to sleep, Mishap.

Notso Fri 04-Jul-14 07:32:00

Another vote for tweeting, it's very effective.

MiceElf Fri 04-Jul-14 07:49:29

Pm your Twitter name if you don't want to put it on here, as Whenim says we'll all retweet and add our twopence worth.

vegasmags Fri 04-Jul-14 08:13:30

Yes - tweet/retweet can often get a response when it seems all else has failed. Do hope you had a better night than you feared.

JessM Fri 04-Jul-14 08:33:40

Twitter can work really well. Also use this to email everyone:

https://www.writetothem.com

Just put in your postcode and it will enable you to email councillors, MPs and MEPs. It is a huge time saver.

DebnCreme Fri 04-Jul-14 08:37:02

Oh Mishap that sounds dreadful, no wonder you are angry and justifiably so. As suggested make use of Twitter but also write to the head of the company and name names; sending copies of those emails too. Their employee needs to be taken to task for his treatment of you! flowers hope you managed to get some sleep.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 08:57:21

Very useful website there Jess. Thank you for putting that up. I have bookmarked it in case we ever need it.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 08:59:42

Although I read Twitter a lot, I don't really understand how it works re tweeting. If I tweeted a complaint, would it only be seen by my followers? I've only got three.

Eloethan Fri 04-Jul-14 09:28:25

I hope you manage to sort this out Mishap. It is absolutely disgraceful that you and your husband are having to put up with this, especially with him being unwell. It sounds from what GNrs are saying that tweeting is the best way to get things moving - good luck.

suzied Fri 04-Jul-14 09:42:52

Jingle bells Go onto twitter and search for the company/ council or whoever you want to complain about. They will have a twitter name such as @wellknownwindows you tap on that and include that tag in your tweet e.g. "@wellknownwindows I was promised a call from customer services at well knownwindows last Wednesday . I am still waiting 7 days later.". Because it's got their tag on it they will see it. I got a message from customer services the same day and someone called round the next day. Brilliant

thatbags Fri 04-Jul-14 09:42:54

Good luck, mishap. The advice on here is good. Isn't gransnet great?

Mishap Fri 04-Jul-14 10:06:18

Isn't gransnet great indeed! I was just letting of steam (quite a lot!) and expected a few sympathetic noises, but here I am with lots of useful links and ideas. Brilliant!

I have never tweeted in my life! - perhaps it's time to start!

I have been copying in all the relevant councillors and my MP's office to the emails that have flown hither and thither, but so far they do not seem to have been much help.

However, my neighbour is now acting chair of the parish council and a retired civil engineer - I know he has been banging his head against a brick wall trying to get these problems sorted out to no avail. I have talked to him again this morning about what has been happening and we are going to try and work together to insist that a proper meeting takes place between those villagers at risk, local landowners and a qualified engineer from the company - we do not want this dim local rep to be the person who comes from the company as he is so useless.

It is all such a headache as there is a lot at stake, and the autumn rains will be upon us before you can blink. Last winter was very difficult and I cannot face a repeat of this.

The worst case scenario is that the company says they are not responsible (although it is their gulleys that block up and are too narrow for the quantity of water) and accuse the landowners, who in their turn deny responsibility and say it is the company. There has already been a hint of this.

I think it is a combination of factors: climate change with heavier rainfall; changing farming practices which remove the hedges and grassland that used to hold the land together during heavy rain; and inadequate ancient council drainage systems.

If this proposed meeting bears no fruit I will learn to tweet pdq!

Fingers crossed and huge thanks for all your help!

Mishap Fri 04-Jul-14 11:11:19

I have registered with Twitter!

thatbags Fri 04-Jul-14 11:44:21

Tell us who you are on Twitter, mishap, and then we can spread your tweets further for you for maximum impact. I'm baggythecrust on Twitter.

Lona Fri 04-Jul-14 12:05:29

Yes, we're all poised and ready! smile

Mishap Fri 04-Jul-14 12:31:31

Thanks everyone - I think I need at this stage to let the Parish Council guy arrange the meeting and give them the benefit of the doubt - if they do not come up to scratch I will be tweeting like crazy and will call on you wonderful support network to back me up. Hold those poised tweeting fingers till the meeting has happened!! Huge thanks.
